A Growers’ Meet focused on enhancing rubber production in Tripura was held on Tuesday at Pragna Bhavan, Agartala. The event brought together rubber farmers from across the state, along with key officials, including Kiran Gitte, Secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce.
The primary objectives of the conference were to address challenges faced by rubber farmers, explore strategies to boost production, discuss infrastructure development, and highlight government initiatives supporting the rubber sector.
In his address, Kiran Gitte underscored the importance of modern technology and training in transforming the rubber industry. Reflecting on Tripura’s past success in exporting 35 tons of incense stick materials 10–15 years ago, he noted the decline of the sector due to outdated practices and lack of technological adaptation. “The same fate awaits rubber production if low-grade rubber continues to dominate. It’s crucial to adopt advanced technology, machinery, and proper training to remain competitive,” Gitte warned.
He highlighted key challenges, including high production costs, pest infestations, and market volatility, emphasizing that these can be mitigated with technological advancements and modern farming practices.
The Secretary also outlined various government initiatives designed to support rubber farmers. He noted the success of the Chief Minister’s Rubber Mission, launched in 2021-22 and extended for another five years, which has already benefited thousands of families and expanded plantation coverage. Additionally, the World Bank-aided Rubber Project provides financial and technological support, while the Tripura Forest Development & Plantation Corporation (TFDPC) promotes rubber plantations by offering high-quality planting materials and technical assistance.
The technical session featured discussions on RPD schemes by Arunabha Majumder, Development Officer at ZO Agartala, and Labour Welfare Schemes by Binu Mathew, Assistant Director of Labour Management. Scientists from the Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII) and officials from the Rubber Board also participated in panel discussions and shared insights into public relations initiatives.
The Growers’ Meet underscored the collaborative efforts between farmers, scientists, and government officials to advance Tripura’s rubber industry and ensure sustainable growth for the sector.
