Tripura mountaineer Aritra Roy conquers Mount Aconcagua in Argentina, achieving a major milestone in the Seven Summits Challenge. His self-supported expedition highlights Indian mountaineering excellence, resilience, and global adventure success.
Tripura has earned global recognition in the world of high-altitude mountaineering as Aritra Roy successfully scaled Mount Aconcagua, the highest peak in South America and the tallest mountain outside Asia. Standing at a formidable height of 6,961 meters, the Argentine peak was summited by Roy on January 7, 2026, at 2:00 pm Argentina time, corresponding to 10:30 pm Indian Standard Time.
Mount Aconcagua is widely considered one of the most demanding climbs in the world due to its extreme altitude, volatile weather conditions, and harsh terrain. Despite not requiring technical climbing equipment, the mountain poses serious risks related to altitude sickness, freezing temperatures, and sudden storms. Aritra Roy’s successful ascent reflects not only physical endurance but also exceptional mental resilience and strategic planning.
This remarkable achievement marks another milestone in Roy’s ongoing quest to complete the prestigious Seven Summits Challenge, which involves climbing the highest peak on each of the seven continents. Having already conquered Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak, Roy’s ascent of Aconcagua further strengthens his position among India’s elite mountaineers.
The expedition officially began on December 24, 2025, and was undertaken as a fully self-supported mission by Aritra Roy and fellow mountaineer Paramita Sarkar. Unlike many commercial expeditions that rely heavily on professional guides, porters, and logistical support from organizing companies, the duo chose to climb independently. They carried their own gear, planned acclimatization schedules, managed supplies, and navigated the mountain relying solely on their training, experience, and determination.
Their self-supported approach significantly increased the challenge, making the success even more noteworthy within the global mountaineering community. Such expeditions demand advanced preparation, high-level risk management, and exceptional teamwork, all of which were demonstrated throughout the climb.
Aritra Roy’s success has sparked pride across Tripura and the nation. His achievement symbolizes discipline, perseverance, and the power of focused ambition. Beyond personal accomplishment, the expedition reflects the growing presence of Indian mountaineers on the global stage and highlights the potential of athletes emerging from India’s northeastern states.

The climbers received crucial institutional support that helped turn this ambitious dream into reality. Organizations including the Governor of Tripura, the Department of Skill Development, the District Magistrate of North Tripura, Tripura Gramin Bank, and the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission played an important role in empowering the expedition. Aritra Roy has expressed heartfelt gratitude to these institutions and to the people of Tripura, whose encouragement and blessings fueled his journey.
The team is scheduled to return to Agartala by January 19, 2026, after completing post-summit formalities and descent. For Tripura, this historic ascent stands as a collective triumph and a powerful reminder that with courage, commitment, and unwavering resolve, even the world’s highest challenges can be overcome.
