Tripura leads Northeast India in PM-KUSUM implementation with 8,364 solar pumps installed and 2,531 more underway, benefiting thousands of farmers through free irrigation support, expanding agricultural productivity, and strengthening rural livelihoods under the renewable energy-driven farming initiative.
The implementation of solar-powered irrigation systems under the PM-KUSUM scheme has gained significant momentum in Tripura, with 8,364 solar pumps already installed across the state and another 2,531 currently under progress. The initiative, jointly carried out by the Power Department and the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA), is aimed at improving irrigation facilities and increasing farmers’ income through renewable energy-based agricultural support.
Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath shared the information during his visit to Satdubia village in Mohanpur, where he inspected the solar-powered agricultural irrigation systems developed under the PM-KUSUM project. He also visited the solar-powered tea garden village in Mohanpur and interacted directly with local farmers and residents benefiting from the scheme.
According to the Minister, the project has already benefited 8,364 farmers, while another 2,531 farmers are expected to receive support after the ongoing installations are completed. The scheme has also brought 41,820 kani of agricultural land under irrigation so far, significantly improving cultivation opportunities in rural areas.

During the inspection, the Minister said that villagers and farmers are now experiencing the benefits of free solar power and irrigation water, which has helped increase agricultural productivity and reduce farming costs. He noted that the initiative is bringing visible improvements to the rural economy and strengthening the agricultural sector in the state.
Under the PM-KUSUM scheme, the installation cost of each solar-powered irrigation unit is approximately Rs 3 lakh. Farmers contribute only Rs 15,000, while the remaining expenditure is covered by the government. The Minister emphasized that Tripura is also bearing the boring cost for the irrigation systems, a support measure that is not being provided by other states.
Highlighting the state’s achievement, Ratan Lal Nath said that Tripura has secured the first position among Northeastern states in the implementation of the PM-KUSUM scheme. He stated that the government’s target is to install a total of 10,895 solar pumps, which would bring 54,475 kani of land under irrigation coverage.
As part of the ongoing expansion, work on 2,531 additional pumps is progressing steadily. Once completed, these new installations are expected to irrigate another 12,655 kani of land and extend benefits to 2,531 more farmers across the state.
The Minister also reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening agricultural infrastructure through renewable energy initiatives. He said the project is not only helping farmers reduce dependency on conventional electricity and fuel-powered irrigation systems but is also promoting environmentally sustainable farming practices.

Speaking about the impact of the scheme, Ratan Lal Nath stated that solar energy has brought a “new ray of hope” into the lives of farmers. He added that affordable and accessible irrigation facilities are increasing agricultural output and helping rural communities move toward stronger economic stability.
The PM-KUSUM initiative continues to emerge as one of Tripura’s major rural development efforts, combining clean energy with agricultural growth while improving the livelihoods of thousands of farming families across the state.
