Tripura Opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhury accused the state government of promoting political intolerance, suppressing dissent, and failing to control rising incidents of violence and intimidation targeting critics, activists, and social media voices across the state.

Political tensions intensified in Tripura after Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury on Monday launched a sharp attack on the state government, alleging that the administration is functioning under a “dictatorial rule” where criticism and dissent are being systematically suppressed.

Addressing the media over recent incidents of alleged violence and intimidation reported from different parts of the state, the senior CPI(M) leader claimed that an atmosphere of fear and political intolerance has spread across Tripura. According to him, individuals raising questions against the government, including social media content creators and independent voices, are increasingly facing threats and harassment.

Chaudhury alleged that people exposing alleged irregularities, corruption, and administrative failures are being targeted for expressing their opinions. He stated that even citizens using digital platforms to voice criticism are not being spared from intimidation.

“The situation in the state is deeply concerning. Anyone raising questions against the government or exposing irregularities is being targeted. Even content creators expressing opinions through social media platforms are not being spared,” Chaudhury alleged while expressing concern over what he described as shrinking democratic space in the state.

The opposition leader further claimed that freedom of expression and democratic rights are under severe pressure. He argued that criticism of the government is increasingly being treated as opposition to the administration itself, creating what he termed a dangerous political environment.

Chaudhury also accused the ruling establishment of failing to maintain law and order effectively. Referring to recent incidents of attacks and alleged political intimidation, he claimed that violent activities and intimidation tactics have increased in recent months across several areas of the state.

He demanded that the government ensure equal protection and safety for all citizens irrespective of their political affiliations or ideological positions. Stressing the importance of democratic values, the CPI(M) leader urged the administration to guarantee a safe environment for dissenting opinions and political criticism.

The remarks have added to the ongoing political confrontation in Tripura, where opposition parties have repeatedly accused the government of suppressing criticism and allowing an atmosphere of political hostility to grow. However, no official response from the state government regarding Chaudhury’s allegations was immediately available at the time of reporting.
