Tripura Human Rights Commission will observe International Human Rights Day on December 10 at Agartala’s Pragna Bhavan, featuring key state dignitaries and awareness programmes to promote the theme “Human Rights: Our Everyday Essentials” and strengthen public participation in human rights protection.
The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) is preparing to mark International Human Rights Day on December 10 with a state-level observance scheduled at Agartala’s Pragna Bhavan. The event aims to reinforce the global commitment to protecting human dignity, equality, and justice, while also enhancing public awareness about the essential role of human rights in everyday life.
This year’s global theme, “Human Rights: Our Everyday Essentials,” emphasizes that fundamental freedoms are not abstract ideals but practical necessities that shape the quality of life, security, and equality for every individual. The Tripura Human Rights Commission has aligned its programme with this universal message to encourage greater civic participation and broader public engagement on rights-related issues.
During a press conference held at the THRC office, Secretary Dhan Babu Reang elaborated on the key highlights of the upcoming event. He confirmed that Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha will formally inaugurate the programme. His participation reinforces the State government’s commitment to strengthening human rights protections, enhancing institutional accountability, and promoting justice-oriented governance.
A number of prominent dignitaries will be present at the observance. These include Anurag, Director General of Police, Tripura; Shaktimoy Chakraborty, Advocate General of Tripura; Jharna Debbarma, Chairperson of the Tripura Women’s Commission; and Shankari Das, Secretary of the Law Department. Their involvement reflects the multi-sectoral collaboration necessary for advancing human rights principles across administrative, legal, and social platforms.
The event will be presided over by Justice Arindam Lodh, Chairperson of the Tripura Human Rights Commission. Under his leadership, the Commission has been consistently working to address complaints, improve public understanding of human rights, and ensure outreach to vulnerable communities. Justice Lodh’s presence underscores the Commission’s commitment to impartiality, transparency, and public service.
According to Secretary Reang, the Commission is focused not only on marking the international observance but also on ensuring that human rights awareness reaches every citizen. He highlighted that human rights are universal, indivisible, and integral to the functioning of any democratic society. Educating the public about these principles is essential to preventing violations, promoting harmony, and strengthening the social fabric.
The state-level event will include discussions, addresses by dignitaries, and awareness-building sessions that highlight key themes such as gender equality, access to justice, police accountability, rights of children and women, and the need for institutional cooperation. The aim is to create a platform where diverse stakeholders—administrators, legal experts, law enforcement personnel, civil society representatives, and citizens—can come together to deliberate on how to safeguard rights more effectively.
Reang urged the general public to attend the programme at Pragna Bhavan on December 10 and participate actively in the observance. He emphasized that human rights are not the responsibility of institutions alone but require collective effort from every individual. Public participation is vital to ensuring transparency, strengthening accountability, and promoting a culture of respect and dignity.
Also present at the press briefing was Additional Superintendent of Police Dipankar Pal, who is currently appointed to the Commission. His presence indicates the Commission’s emphasis on law enforcement collaboration in addressing rights-related issues. Ensuring that frontline officers are well-aware of human rights norms is essential in promoting fair and just policing practices.
International Human Rights Day, celebrated annually on December 10, marks the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. The day serves as a reminder of global commitments to equality, liberty, and justice. Tripura’s observance aims to bring these global ideals closer to everyday citizens while reiterating the importance of safeguarding rights at the state level.
