Tripura has received over 20 applications under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), with two applicants already granted Indian citizenship. Authorities said several cases are under scrutiny at district and state levels. The online processing mechanism continues as officials examine pending applications across different parts of the state.

Authorities in Tripura have received more than 20 applications under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), with two applicants already being granted Indian citizenship while several other cases remain under scrutiny at different stages of the verification and approval process, officials said.

According to officials familiar with the matter, applications under the CAA are processed entirely through an online portal. Unlike conventional administrative procedures, there is no physical mechanism for filing or processing applications. The system relies on digital submission, followed by scrutiny and recommendations from district authorities before the cases are examined by the state-level committee.

An official associated with the process stated that around 20 to 25 applications have been submitted from different parts of Tripura since the implementation of the online mechanism. Most of these applications are currently undergoing verification and examination at various administrative levels.

“Applications are processed through the portal and reviewed after recommendations are received from district authorities. The dashboard maintained under the system reflects the status of every application and the stage at which it is being processed,” the official said.

Officials revealed that several applications are presently under scrutiny at the district level, while others have already reached the state-level committee for further consideration. The multi-tier verification process is aimed at ensuring compliance with the provisions laid down under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

Providing details on recent developments, authorities said six applications had reached the final stage of scrutiny. However, three of those cases were returned for additional examination after discrepancies were detected during the verification process. The remaining three applications were forwarded to the state-level committee for final consideration.

Of the cases reviewed so far, two applicants have successfully received citizenship certificates under the CAA. Officials confirmed that citizenship certificates have already been issued in these cases, marking a significant step in the implementation of the legislation within the state.

A senior official from North Tripura district said that all three recently processed applications belonged to the district. One of the successful applicants, identified as Jhalak Das Chowdhury, has reportedly met the North Tripura District Magistrate and completed the necessary formalities required for obtaining an Aadhaar card following the grant of citizenship.

Officials also confirmed that another woman applicant has been granted Indian citizenship under the provisions of the CAA. However, authorities did not disclose additional personal details regarding the beneficiaries.

No timeline has yet been announced for the disposal of the remaining applications currently under examination. Officials indicated that scrutiny and verification will continue as applications move through the prescribed stages of review.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Act provides a legal pathway to Indian citizenship for eligible individuals belonging to specified communities who migrated from neighbouring countries and fulfil the conditions outlined under the law.

The legislation has remained a subject of debate in the Northeast since its enactment. The CAA triggered protests in several northeastern states, including Tripura, where various tribal organisations expressed concerns regarding its potential impact on indigenous communities. Several petitions challenging the law were subsequently filed before the Supreme Court, with some matters still pending adjudication.

To address concerns related to the protection of indigenous populations, areas covered under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution in the Northeast have been exempted from the purview of the CAA. These provisions were included to safeguard the cultural, social and demographic identities of tribal communities residing in Autonomous District Council areas.

As authorities continue processing applications, the implementation of the CAA in Tripura remains under close observation, with more cases expected to move through the verification and approval stages in the coming months.
