GB Pant Hospital in Agartala celebrated its 65th Foundation Day, showcasing decades of healthcare progress, infrastructure upgrades, and new initiatives including an MoU with AIIMS Delhi to strengthen medical services across Tripura.
The 65th Foundation Day of Govind Ballabh Pant (GB Pant) Hospital, Tripura’s leading government healthcare institution, was celebrated with great enthusiasm at the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) auditorium on Tuesday. The event highlighted the hospital’s historic journey since its establishment in 1961 and its pivotal role in advancing the state’s medical infrastructure.
The commemorative program was attended by several distinguished guests, including MLA and Chairperson of the Rogi Kalyan Samiti, Mina Rani Sarkar, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, Director H. P. Sharma, Principal of AGMC Dr. Anup Kumar Saha, Member Secretary of the National Health Mission (NHM) Dr. Nupur Debbarma, Member Secretary of the Blood Transfusion Council Dr. Biswajit Debbarma, and Deputy Superintendent of GB Pant Hospital Dr. Kanak Choudhury, among others.
Reflecting on Six Decades of Service
In her keynote address, MLA Mina Rani Sarkar recalled the humble beginnings of GB Pant Hospital, established in 1961, and its gradual transformation into one of Tripura’s most trusted healthcare centers. She emphasized that the hospital’s continued progress reflects the government’s commitment to providing quality and affordable medical care to all citizens.
Sarkar expressed optimism that with sustained public support and policy backing, GB Pant Hospital would continue evolving into a premier healthcare institution in the North-East. “This hospital stands as a symbol of public trust and medical excellence. With the right investments and support, it will achieve even greater milestones in the years ahead,” she stated.
Government Health Schemes Empowering the Poor
Highlighting the impact of central and state health initiatives, Sarkar commended the role of Ayushman Bharat and Jan Arogya Yojana in making quality healthcare accessible to economically weaker sections. Through these schemes, eligible patients can avail of free treatment benefits up to ₹5 lakh, ensuring that financial hardship does not prevent anyone from receiving timely medical care.
“These health schemes have changed lives,” Sarkar noted. “Many poor patients who once could not afford treatment are now returning home healthy, thanks to the benefits provided under these programs.”
Infrastructure Boost Under the BJP Government
Discussing the healthcare infrastructure in Tripura, Sarkar observed that since the formation of the BJP-led government, there has been notable improvement not only at GB Pant Hospital but also across district and sub-divisional hospitals. “Patients now rarely need to travel outside the state for advanced medical care,” she said, adding that this has strengthened the state’s self-reliance in the healthcare sector.
However, she also acknowledged that as Tripura’s main referral hospital, GB Pant often faces challenges such as high patient inflow and ICU bed shortages. She urged hospital administrators to ensure that patients in critical need are promptly referred to nearby facilities such as IGM Hospital and TMC Hapania to receive timely care.
MoU with AIIMS Delhi to Boost Medical Development
In a significant announcement, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte revealed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) would soon be signed with AIIMS Delhi in the presence of the Chief Minister. This collaboration aims to enhance medical training, research, and specialized healthcare services at GB Pant Hospital.
Gitte described the hospital as a “beacon of hope” for Tripura’s population and praised its crucial role in providing healthcare services to thousands of patients every day. “GB Pant Hospital has become synonymous with trust and commitment. Our goal is to ensure that every citizen, regardless of income, has access to world-class medical treatment right here in Tripura,” he affirmed.
Celebration of Service and Compassion
To commemorate the occasion, the hospital organized a blood donation camp, symbolizing collective responsibility toward saving lives. In addition, fruits and sweets were distributed among patients, adding a sense of warmth and celebration to the event.
