Tripura’s Minister for Tourism and Transport, Sushanta Chowdhury, represented the state at the two-day National Conference of Tourism Ministers 2025, held in Udaipur, Rajasthan. The event, organized by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, began on Tuesday and brought together tourism ministers and officials from all Indian states and Union Territories to discuss strategies for transforming India into a global tourism powerhouse.

The prestigious conference served as a collaborative platform to enhance sustainable tourism practices, digital transformation, and inter-state cooperation. Its central focus was to explore new strategies for promoting India’s cultural, natural, and heritage-based tourism while aligning with the national vision of making India a world-class destination.

The gathering witnessed the participation of several distinguished dignitaries, including Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Cabinet Minister for Tourism; Gulab Chand Kataria, Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh; Diya Kumari, Deputy Chief Minister and Tourism Minister of Rajasthan; Lieutenant Governors of various Union Territories; and Tourism Ministers and senior officials from every Indian state.

Tripura’s Vision for Tourism Development

During the conference, Minister Sushanta Chowdhury actively engaged in key discussions focusing on state-specific tourism opportunities and sustainable growth. He highlighted Tripura’s emerging appeal as a Northeastern tourism hotspot, emphasizing its rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and potential for eco-tourism.

In his interactions with Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Chowdhury discussed Tripura’s ongoing projects, tourism infrastructure, and strategies for integrating the state more effectively into India’s national tourism circuit. The meeting focused on harnessing digital tools, improving connectivity, and developing community-based tourism models that empower local stakeholders.

Minister Chowdhury also met Rajasthan’s Deputy Chief Minister and Tourism Minister, Diya Kumari, for a productive exchange on tourism promotion and collaborative growth opportunities between Rajasthan and Tripura. He extended a personal invitation to her to visit Tripura and explore its scenic destinations such as Unakoti, Neermahal, Jampui Hills, and Tripurasundari Temple, which represent the state’s blend of natural charm and cultural depth.

Sustainable and Digital Transformation in Tourism

A major theme of the conference was “Sustainable Tourism and Digital Transformation”, where participating states shared their innovative models for balancing economic growth with environmental preservation. Discussions also revolved around adopting new technologies for tourist facilitation, including smart tourism applications, AI-based promotion, and digital ticketing systems to enhance visitor experience.

Sushanta Chowdhury, in his address, reiterated Tripura’s commitment to sustainability, saying the state is focusing on eco-friendly tourism, heritage conservation, and responsible travel initiatives that align with India’s long-term tourism vision.

He noted, “Tripura has immense potential to become a sought-after tourism destination in Northeast India. Our focus remains on improving accessibility, promoting homestay-based tourism, and leveraging digital media to highlight our unique culture and traditions.”

Inter-State Collaboration and Future Outlook

The Udaipur conference provided a unique opportunity for states and Union Territories to align their policies with the national goal of attracting 100 million international tourists in the coming decade. Sessions on policy coordination, marketing synergy, and infrastructure development encouraged states to build joint circuits that allow visitors to experience India’s diversity more seamlessly.

Officials accompanying Minister Chowdhury included UK Chakma, Secretary, Tripura Tourism Department, and Prashant Badal Negi, Director of Tourism. Together, they showcased Tripura’s developmental roadmap, investment potential, and tourism initiatives to delegates and stakeholders.
