Tripura has received ₹1,041.07 crore under a major central interim funding package aimed at strengthening rural infrastructure, expanding MGNREGA employment, improving worker welfare, and accelerating village development. The initiative forms part of the Centre’s nationwide Viksit Bharat-Gramin Bharat roadmap, ensuring sustainable rural growth and stronger local economies.

The Central Government has allocated ₹1,041.07 crore to Tripura under a massive interim funding package designed to strengthen village infrastructure, improve worker welfare, and create sustainable employment opportunities across rural India.

The announcement was made during a high-level virtual meeting chaired by Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The conference brought together ministers and senior officials from States and Union Territories across the country to discuss preparations for the upcoming launch of the ambitious “Viksit Bharat – Gramin Bharat” initiative.

The financial package forms part of a broader national strategy aimed at accelerating rural transformation while ensuring that employment opportunities remain uninterrupted during the transition to a new development framework. According to the Union Minister, the revised system is scheduled to come into effect on July 1, 2026, and has been designed to strengthen local economies while safeguarding the interests of rural workers.

Chouhan emphasized that the allocated funds will benefit nearly 2.8 lakh Gram Panchayats across India. Under the scheme, village councils will receive substantial financial support to undertake infrastructure and community development projects in accordance with the guidelines of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

The Minister stated that the initiative seeks to achieve two critical objectives simultaneously—creating long-term employment security for rural households and developing durable community assets that contribute to economic growth. He stressed that State Governments and local authorities must ensure transparent utilization of funds so that every rupee is directed toward approved development projects.

A major focus of the meeting was the modernization of rural governance systems. Chouhan reviewed the preparedness of States in implementing technology-driven administrative reforms, including Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanisms, automated SMS notification systems, electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) processes, and facial authentication tools aimed at improving transparency and efficiency.

The Union Minister praised the progress achieved by several States in aligning their financial frameworks with the objectives of the Viksit Bharat–Gramin Bharat campaign. He noted that 26 States have already revised their budgetary structures to support the initiative. However, he urged Mizoram, Telangana, Karnataka, and Jharkhand to expedite necessary adjustments to ensure smooth implementation of the programme.

Officials participating in the meeting were also directed to identify local agricultural peak seasons and plan development activities accordingly. In addition, State administrations were instructed to complete e-KYC enrolment processes and organize awareness and training workshops at block and district levels to facilitate effective implementation of the new framework.

Highlighting the importance of grassroots democracy, Chouhan reiterated that local development projects would continue to be selected by Gram Sabhas and Gram Panchayats. This approach, he said, would ensure that communities remain at the centre of decision-making and that projects reflect local priorities and needs.

The Minister further issued clear instructions to administrative authorities to protect existing employment opportunities under MGNREGA. He stressed that wage payments to workers must not face delays or reductions during the transition period leading up to the launch of the new policy framework.

For Tripura, the allocation of ₹1,041.07 crore is expected to significantly strengthen rural infrastructure, generate employment opportunities, and improve the quality of life in villages. The funding is likely to support a wide range of projects, including road construction, water conservation, community assets, and other development initiatives aimed at enhancing rural livelihoods.

Concluding the session, Chouhan invited State representatives to participate in the National Rural Development Conference scheduled to be held on June 28 and 29 at the ICAR-IARI Pusa Campus in New Delhi. The conference is expected to serve as a key platform for finalizing strategies and ensuring the successful rollout of nationwide rural development programmes under the Viksit Bharat–Gramin Bharat vision.
