The Ministry of Rural Development has sanctioned 25 PM-JANMAN road projects in Tripura, improving 65 km of connectivity for 30 PVTG habitations. The initiative boosts rural infrastructure, enhances access to essential services, and promotes inclusive socio-economic development.
The Ministry of Rural Development has approved a significant infrastructure boost for Tripura by sanctioning 25 new road projects covering 65.38 kilometres under the Road Connectivity component of the PM-JANMAN initiative. With a total estimated investment of Rs. 68.67 crore, these projects aim to dramatically improve access to remote tribal regions and strengthen socio-economic development across the state.
According to official inputs, the newly sanctioned roadworks will ensure all-weather connectivity to at least 30 habitations belonging to Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). These communities, historically isolated and underserved, will experience enhanced access to essential services and greater integration into mainstream development activities. The move is being seen as a major step toward empowering marginalized tribal populations in Tripura, many of whom reside in the state’s hilly and forested terrains.
Authorities have emphasised that the initiative is not just an infrastructure project but a transformative intervention, designed to address persistent gaps in mobility, healthcare, education, and market access for PVTG communities. Improved roads are expected to reduce travel time, enable faster emergency response, enhance school accessibility for tribal children, and facilitate better delivery of welfare schemes in hard-to-reach areas.
Boost to Rural Connectivity and Economic Growth
The sanctioned road projects will play a critical role in bridging the divide between remote tribal villages and urban centres, supporting smoother transport of agricultural produce, forest goods, and local handicrafts. Officials noted that better road connectivity will help rural households—particularly vulnerable communities—improve their income potential through expanded market access. Enhanced mobility is also expected to attract micro-entrepreneurship, small businesses, and investment in rural tourism.
By strengthening last-mile connectivity, the projects will stimulate trade and commerce across several rural belts. Local economies, especially in the tribal-dominated zones, are projected to witness substantial growth as transport constraints decrease. The initiative aligns with the broader goal of strengthening the state’s rural infrastructure and promoting balanced regional development.
Aligned with the Vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’
The government has highlighted that this infrastructural push is anchored in the national vision of building a prosperous Northeast and steering India toward the objective of Viksit Bharat (Developed India). Enhanced road connectivity supports the broader development framework by integrating rural populations with opportunities in education, public health, and livelihood enhancement.
Officials further noted that the PM-JANMAN projects have been conceptualised to ensure inclusive growth, especially for Scheduled Tribes and PVTGs—groups often left behind in conventional development cycles. The ministry emphasised that improved road networks will significantly enhance the delivery of essential government services in the northeastern region, enabling welfare programmes to reach remote pockets with greater efficiency.
Stronger Service Delivery for PVTG Habitations
With 30 PVTG habitations set to benefit directly from the newly sanctioned roadways, authorities expect a marked improvement in the daily lives of vulnerable tribal communities. Reliable road access will facilitate mobile healthcare services, including immunisation, maternal health support, and emergency medical transport. Students from tribal villages will also have improved access to schools and educational institutions, reducing dropout rates caused by travel barriers.
Moreover, officials highlighted the qualitative shift expected in socio-economic indicators once mobility improves. Households will be able to access markets more frequently, receive timely supplies, and connect to government support systems with greater ease. The new roads will also play a critical role in disaster management by allowing quicker evacuation and relief operations during floods, landslides, and other emergencies.
Commitment to Inclusive and Sustainable Development
The sanctioned projects under PM-JANMAN reaffirm the government’s commitment to inclusive development, with a specific focus on tribal welfare and regional equity. By prioritising infrastructure development in remote tribal pockets, the Ministry of Rural Development aims to remove long-standing barriers that limit the growth of marginalised communities.

Officials believe that the new roads will not only improve connectivity but also foster long-term prosperity and social transformation in the northeastern region. As the projects progress, Tripura’s PVTG habitations are expected to become more integrated with the state’s mainstream development pathways, advancing the welfare, dignity, and economic opportunity of some of India’s most vulnerable populations.
