Tripura records a 12% surge in food grain production as Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath highlights youth-led innovation, organic farming expansion, and district self-sufficiency during the State Level Kisan Mela 2025–26 at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala.

The northeastern state of Tripura has recorded a remarkable 12 percent increase in food grain production this year, signaling a positive shift in the agricultural sector driven by innovation, youth participation, and expanding natural farming initiatives. The announcement was made by Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath during the State Level Kisan Mela 2025–26 and Best Farmers Awards ceremony held at Pragya Bhavan.

Addressing farmers, agricultural experts, and government officials at the event, Nath stressed that agriculture remains the foundation of Tripura’s rural economy and overall development. According to the minister, farmers continue to be the driving force behind the state’s progress, and the increasing involvement of young people in agriculture is helping transform the sector with modern practices and technology.

“Farmers are the pillars of our economy. Agriculture today is not limited to crop cultivation; it also includes fisheries, forestry, and animal husbandry. The youth of Tripura are now entering this field with innovation and new ideas, which is strengthening productivity and profitability,” Nath said while addressing the gathering.

The minister highlighted that natural farming practices have expanded to 5,550 hectares across the state, marking a significant move toward sustainable agriculture. Additionally, organic farming has witnessed dramatic growth, increasing from just 2,000 hectares seven years ago to nearly 26,500 hectares today. Officials believe that this expansion reflects both policy support and growing market demand for chemical-free produce.

Tripura’s organic agricultural products are also gaining international recognition. Specialty items such as bird’s eye chilli, ginger, Kalikhasa rice, and turmeric are increasingly finding buyers in global markets, including Germany, boosting farmers’ incomes and enhancing the state’s export potential.

The minister further highlighted district-level agricultural progress. According to Nath, Sepahijala district has already achieved self-sufficiency in paddy production, followed by South Tripura district and Gomati district. This year, Khowai district has also joined the list of districts producing sufficient paddy to meet local demand. The state government is now working toward making all districts self-reliant in food grain production.

Nath reiterated the broader national vision of Narendra Modi to transform India into a global grain storage and agricultural export hub. He emphasized that improving production capacity, strengthening storage infrastructure, and expanding market connectivity are crucial steps toward achieving that goal.

“Our farmers work tirelessly to feed the nation. This Kisan Mela is organized to honor their dedication and inspire greater progress in agriculture,” Nath added.

During the ceremony, 10 farmers received the Best Farmer Award at the state level, each accompanied by a cash prize of ₹50,000. Additionally, 80 farmers were honored at the district level with ₹25,000 each, while around 300 farmers will be recognized at the block level with ₹10,000 each for their outstanding contributions to agricultural productivity.

Agriculture department officials described the rise in food grain output and expansion of natural farming as a major step toward strengthening Tripura’s agricultural economy, enhancing farmer livelihoods, and ensuring long-term food security for the state.

Experts believe that continued youth participation, adoption of sustainable farming practices, and expanding global markets for organic products could further accelerate Tripura’s transformation into a model agricultural state in Northeast India.
