Tripura Congress accused ruling alliance partners of fuelling ethnic polarisation and unrest in tribal areas ahead of village council and 2028 Assembly elections, alleging political confrontation, law enforcement failure, and divisive tactics threatening peace and communal harmony in the northeastern state.
The Tripura Pradesh Congress on Sunday accused the ruling alliance in the state of deliberately encouraging ethnic polarisation and political unrest in tribal areas ahead of the upcoming village council elections and the 2028 Assembly elections.
In a strongly worded statement, Pradesh Congress chief spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty alleged that the recent incidents of confrontation and disturbances in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) were not isolated events but part of a calculated political strategy designed to divide communities for electoral advantage.
According to Chakraborty, tensions in the ADC areas have steadily intensified over the past year, while the state administration has allegedly failed to take meaningful legal action against those responsible for triggering unrest. He claimed that the developments unfolding in tribal regions reflected a wider political agenda aimed at deepening divisions between communities before major elections in the state.
The Congress leader referred to recent protests and the 48-hour shutdown in Mandai following the alleged torching of a vehicle belonging to a youth leader of TIPRA Motha. He alleged that law enforcement agencies remained largely passive despite rising incidents of disruption and confrontation in tribal-dominated areas.
Chakraborty further accused the alliance partners of engaging in aggressive political rivalry during the ADC elections, alleging that mutual attacks and provocative statements contributed significantly to the growing atmosphere of mistrust and ethnic tension. He claimed that political confrontations were being used to divert public attention from pressing issues such as unemployment, corruption, declining law and order, and public welfare concerns.
The Congress spokesperson also expressed concern over what he described as increasing incidents of extortion threats, violent clashes, and attacks allegedly linked to political and financial rivalries within sections of the ruling establishment. He warned that such developments could seriously damage communal harmony and social stability in the state if left unchecked.
Drawing comparisons with earlier phases of ethnic unrest in Tripura and the continuing tensions in Manipur, Chakraborty alleged that divisive political tactics could have dangerous long-term consequences for peace in the northeastern region. He stressed that repeated attempts to exploit ethnic identities for political gain risked destabilising social relations and weakening democratic institutions.

Appealing for restraint and unity, the Congress urged both tribal and non-tribal communities to reject divisive politics and work together through peaceful and democratic means to protect harmony and stability in Tripura. The party also called for stronger administrative intervention to prevent further escalation of tensions in sensitive areas ahead of future elections.
The ruling alliance has not yet officially responded to the allegations made by the Congress.
