Tripura PCC chief Ashish Kumar Saha accused the BJP government of failing law and order, promoting unrest, and silencing opposition voices. He alleged attacks on legislators, divisive tribal politics, and threats to democracy, urging citizens to resist authoritarianism and protect democratic values in the state.
The political temperature in Tripura has once again risen as the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) launched a sharp attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of undermining democracy, promoting unrest, and playing divisive politics. Addressing the media at Congress Bhavan on Tuesday, Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Ashish Kumar Saha alleged that the BJP government has completely failed to uphold law and order in the state.
Saha stated that instead of focusing on governance and public welfare, the ruling party is deliberately trying to create divisions within society by pitting tribal and non-tribal communities against each other. “The BJP’s governance model in Tripura has moved far away from democratic principles. The law and order situation has deteriorated, and instead of addressing the concerns of the people, the ruling party is promoting unrest,” he said.
BJP Supporters’ Demonstration Raises Concerns
Highlighting a recent incident, Saha expressed strong concern over a demonstration staged by BJP supporters outside the Congress Bhavan. According to him, during the protest, BJP workers hurled derogatory remarks against the central leadership of the Congress party. He claimed that such provocative actions were being actively encouraged by the state government while opposition voices were being systematically silenced.
“This is not democracy. When ruling party supporters are emboldened to attack the opposition and even insult national leaders with impunity, it shows how much respect the government has for democratic institutions,” Saha said.
Opposition Under Attack
The PCC chief also alleged that several opposition legislators and even independent MLAs had come under attack in recent months, with incidents of violence reported at their residences. Shockingly, he claimed that in many of these cases, the police acted as “mute spectators,” failing to intervene or bring perpetrators to justice.
He accused the state government of protecting offenders and shielding them from the law instead of taking action. “The government is responsible for maintaining peace and upholding the rule of law. But in Tripura, offenders are being safeguarded while victims—particularly from the opposition—are left without protection,” he said.
Targeting of Opposition and Media
In a further escalation of his attack, Saha criticised Higher Education and Panchayat Minister Kishor Barman for allegedly branding opposition leaders and journalists as “enemies” of the ruling party. He warned that such statements were not only irresponsible but also dangerous in a democratic setup.
“If opposition parties and the media are declared enemies, then what kind of democracy are we living in?” he asked, emphasizing that political differences should never turn into a justification for suppressing freedom of speech and democratic rights.
According to Saha, such rhetoric poses a serious threat to democratic values and undermines the role of media as the fourth pillar of democracy. He said the Congress party strongly condemned attempts to intimidate journalists or paint them as adversaries for reporting independently.
Democracy at Stake
The Congress leader’s remarks reflect the growing friction between the ruling BJP and the opposition in Tripura. Over the past few years, opposition parties have repeatedly accused the state government of failing to ensure free political activity, alleging intimidation, violence, and suppression of dissent.
Saha reiterated that democracy thrives on debate, dissent, and accountability. “When those in power view opposition leaders, independent legislators, and journalists as adversaries rather than stakeholders in democracy, then the very foundation of governance is at risk,” he said.
He further called on the state administration to restore peace and order, ensure security for all political representatives irrespective of party affiliation, and create an environment where media professionals can function without fear or bias.
Congress Vows to Resist
Concluding his address, Saha assured that the Congress party would continue to raise its voice against injustice and democratic erosion in Tripura. He appealed to citizens, civil society groups, and democratic institutions to stand united against divisive politics and authoritarian tendencies.

“The Congress party will not bow down to threats or intimidation. We will continue our fight for democracy, justice, and the rights of every citizen of Tripura,” he said.
As the political confrontation deepens, the issue of law and order—and the allegation of deliberate polarisation—appears set to become a significant point of contention in the state’s political discourse in the coming months.
