In a step towards enhancing healthcare services, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha launched the STAR-NCD (Non-Communicable Diseases) project on Thursday at the Karl Landsteiner Auditorium of the Government Medical College in Agartala. Highlighting the state government’s commitment to improving healthcare, Dr. Saha reiterated that health services remain a top priority for his administration.

The STAR-NCD scheme, which is part of the Indian Council of Medical Research’s (ICMR) National Health Research initiative, aims to strengthen diagnostic and treatment facilities for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by enhancing ambulatory care services across the state. Tripura is one of four Indian states selected for the initial rollout of the project.

Modernizing Healthcare Services

Dr. Saha emphasized the importance of the project in identifying and treating non-communicable diseases, which account for a substantial portion of the state’s healthcare burden. He noted that about 62 percent of patients in India suffer from NCDs such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease, with similar figures reflected in Tripura.

“The STAR-NCD project will play a crucial role in accurately identifying the number of NCD patients and providing them with timely and appropriate treatment. The initiative is expected to set new directions for the state’s medical field,” the Chief Minister said.

He further mentioned that the first phase of the project has already been successfully launched in the Gomati District and will soon be expanded to other parts of the state. Dr. Saha also stressed that NCDs are primarily driven by lifestyle factors, and raising awareness about prevention is essential for tackling the growing issue.

Innovations in Health Infrastructure

During the event, the Chief Minister also inaugurated the Health Council Registration Portal, which will streamline registration for the three divisions of the State Health Department. He praised the state’s progress in adopting modern medical technologies, stating that Tripura’s healthcare services are now on par with many other Indian states. The Chief Minister also noted that complex medical operations are being performed locally, reducing the need for patients to seek treatment outside the state.

Secretary of the Health Department, Kiran Gitte, described the launch as a “milestone moment” for the state’s healthcare system. He emphasized that the STAR-NCD project will be actively monitored in all districts to ensure that patients receive proper referrals and medication.

With the continued rollout of the STAR-NCD scheme, the state government hopes to address the growing burden of non-communicable diseases while fostering a healthier future for the people of Tripura.
