Tripura Legislative Assembly pays heartfelt tribute to former Speaker Biswabandhu Sen. Members observe silence as obituary reference recalls his political journey, leadership, and legacy in Tripura politics after his death in December 2025.

The Tripura Legislative Assembly on Friday paid solemn tribute to its former Speaker Biswabandhu Sen, remembering his contributions to parliamentary democracy and public life in the state. Members across party lines stood in respect as an obituary reference was read out in the House by Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Paul.

Following the obituary reference, legislators observed a two-minute silence in memory of their departed colleague. The session was subsequently adjourned as a mark of respect to the late leader who had served the Assembly for several years in various capacities.

Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Paul informed the House that Biswabandhu Sen, who was serving as Speaker of the 13th Tripura Legislative Assembly, passed away on December 26, 2025, at a private hospital in Bengaluru after undergoing prolonged medical treatment. He was 72 years old at the time of his death.

According to the obituary reference, Sen’s health deteriorated suddenly on August 8, 2025. On that day, he had completed official duties at the Assembly and was returning to his residence in Dharmanagar when he reportedly collapsed at Agartala Railway Station.

He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors diagnosed serious complications arising from a brain haemorrhage. As his condition remained critical, family members arranged for his transfer to a specialized medical facility in Bengaluru by air ambulance. Despite weeks of treatment and medical supervision, the veteran politician breathed his last while undergoing treatment there.

Born on September 23, 1953, in Dharmanagar in North Tripura district, Sen grew up in a modest environment and completed his early education in his hometown. He later moved to Maharaja Bir Bikram College, widely known as MBB College, where he pursued his graduation.

During his college years, Sen became actively involved in student politics. His early exposure to political activism shaped his future career and strengthened his commitment to public service and democratic values.

Sen began his political journey in the 1970s with the Indian National Congress. Over the decades, he remained actively engaged in grassroots politics and worked extensively among local communities, often highlighting the concerns of marginalized and underrepresented groups.

His electoral success came when he was elected to the Tripura Legislative Assembly from the Dharmanagar constituency as a Congress candidate in both 2008 and 2013. Later, in 2017, Sen joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, marking a significant shift in his political career.

Following his move to the BJP, Sen again contested from Dharmanagar and secured victory in the 2018 and 2023 Assembly elections. His experience and seniority in legislative affairs led to his appointment as Speaker after the formation of the 13th Assembly.

Prior to assuming the role of Speaker, Sen had served as Deputy Speaker during the 12th Assembly, where he gained recognition for his deep understanding of parliamentary procedures and his balanced approach to legislative management.

Members of the House remembered him as a calm, disciplined and impartial presiding officer who upheld the dignity of the Assembly. Legislators recalled that he ensured fair opportunities for all members to express their views during debates while maintaining order and decorum in the House.

Speakers across party lines highlighted Sen’s ability to handle heated discussions with patience and neutrality, qualities that earned him respect among colleagues regardless of political affiliation.

The Assembly collectively expressed condolences to the bereaved family members of the late leader. Members also offered prayers for the peace of his departed soul, acknowledging his long-standing dedication to public life and his contributions to strengthening democratic institutions in Tripura.

With the tribute concluded, the House adjourned proceedings for the day in honor of the late Speaker whose legacy continues to resonate within the Assembly.
