Tripura achieves near 99% success under PMAY-G, setting a national benchmark in rural housing with over 3.73 lakh homes completed, improved living standards, and strong central funding support driving inclusive development and “Housing for All” vision.
In a remarkable achievement for rural development, Tripura has emerged as a national benchmark in implementing the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G), nearing complete fulfillment of its ambitious housing targets. The milestone underscores not just administrative efficiency but a transformative shift in rural living conditions across the state.
Under Phases I and II of the flagship rural housing scheme, Tripura was assigned the construction of 3,76,913 houses. According to the latest official figures, the state has recorded 3,76,194 registrations and 3,76,187 sanctions, while successfully completing 3,73,908 houses. This translates to an impressive success rate of nearly 99 percent, placing Tripura among the top-performing regions in the country.
The financial support from the India government has been instrumental in achieving this feat. A total of ₹4,859.64 crore has been transferred to facilitate construction, ensuring that beneficiaries receive timely assistance. Officials highlight that the efficient fund utilization and transparent monitoring systems have played a critical role in maintaining the pace of implementation.
One of the most striking aspects of Tripura’s performance is the uniform progress across districts. Dhalai district leads with 54,362 completed houses, while Gomati, South Tripura, and West Tripura have reported completion numbers closely matching their sanctioned targets. Even relatively smaller districts such as Unakoti and Khowai have demonstrated commendable progress, contributing to the state’s balanced and consistent success.
The scheme’s monitoring mechanism further reveals strong beneficiary participation. More than 3.70 lakh households have received up to the third installment of financial assistance, while over 3.72 lakh houses have undergone verification and are confirmed as complete. This indicates not only administrative diligence but also active community involvement in the programme.
At the national level, PMAY-G remains one of the largest rural housing initiatives, with 4.15 crore houses allocated and nearly 3 crore already completed since its launch in 2016. The mission aims to provide permanent (pucca) houses equipped with basic amenities by 2029. It also integrates with other key welfare programmes to ensure holistic rural development, including sanitation, drinking water supply, and clean cooking fuel.
For Tripura, this near-complete achievement is more than a statistical success. It represents a significant improvement in the quality of life for thousands of rural families. Secure housing, access to sanitation, clean water, and safer cooking methods are gradually transforming the socio-economic landscape of the state.
Officials believe that Tripura’s model demonstrates how effective governance, community participation, and timely financial support can collectively drive large-scale development programmes. As the state approaches full completion of its targets, its performance under PMAY-G is being widely recognized as a replicable model for other regions.
