Tripura’s Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma fiercely attacked CPI-M leader Jitendra Choudhury, calling him “a curse to the indigenous people.” His statement ignited a political storm ahead of Janajatiya Gaurav Diwas celebrations, highlighting BJP’s focus on tribal welfare and development.

Tripura’s political landscape heated up on Tuesday after State Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma launched a blistering attack on CPI-M leader Jitendra Choudhury, declaring him “a curse to the indigenous people.” Speaking at a press conference in Agartala, the minister asserted that “CPI-M will never return,” marking an aggressive turn in the state’s tribal politics ahead of Janajatiya Gaurav Diwas on November 15.

The press meet was jointly addressed by BJP state general secretary Bipin Debbarma and media in-charge Sunit Sarkar, who unveiled a detailed plan for the upcoming celebration commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda—a revered tribal freedom fighter and symbol of indigenous pride.

BJP’s Tribal Agenda Takes Center Stage

Minister Bikash Debbarma outlined the state government’s renewed emphasis on tribal welfare and empowerment, announcing that the Centre has approved the proposal for establishing a Tribal University in Tripura. “We are in advanced discussions regarding hostel facilities and other infrastructure to promote higher education among tribal youth,” he stated.

Highlighting the government’s ongoing efforts, Debbarma emphasized that tribal governance in ADC areas is functioning effectively under the leadership of the Maharaja, and predicted that the people’s mandate in 2026 will once again favor the BJP-led administration.

Sharp Criticism of CPI-M’s Legacy

Taking a swipe at the CPI-M’s 35-year rule in Tripura, Debbarma accused the Left party of systematically neglecting and exploiting tribal communities. “During their decades in power, the CPI-M established only four Eklavya schools. That clearly shows how little they cared for tribal education and progress,” he said.

The minister further alleged that the CPI-M practiced divisive and violent politics, particularly in regions like Sabroom, and claimed that the party’s relevance among Scheduled Tribe voters has drastically declined. “The people have seen through their politics of deception. CPI-M will not win even a single ST-reserved seat in the future,” Debbarma added.

Janajatiya Gaurav Diwas as a Political Showcase

Positioning the Janajatiya Gaurav Diwas as both a cultural and political event, the BJP aims to showcase its deep engagement with tribal identity, welfare, and heritage. Bipin Debbarma announced that a series of statewide events will be organized from November 13 to 15, encompassing rallies, open forums, cultural processions, and felicitation ceremonies for outstanding tribal achievers.

“Publicity for the celebrations began on November 9 through social media and community networks. Over 20 tribal communities will participate in district-level events, culminating in a grand rally in Agartala that will start from Uma Kanta Academy and conclude at Rabindra Centenary Hall,” said Bipin Debbarma.

The main state-level event will be held at Khumulwng, the headquarters of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). A spectacular performance by 1,200 Mamita dancers at the Eklavya School will serve as the highlight of the celebration, symbolizing unity and cultural pride among indigenous groups.

Political Messaging and the Road to 2026

Analysts believe Bikash Debbarma’s fiery statement against Jitendra Choudhury was not just a personal attack but a strategic political message aimed at consolidating the BJP’s hold over tribal constituencies before the next Assembly elections. The minister’s assertion that “CPI-M will never return” underscores the ruling party’s confidence in its grassroots development work and tribal welfare initiatives.

With the Tribal University project, educational reforms, and infrastructure expansion, the BJP is seeking to cement its image as a champion of indigenous empowerment. Meanwhile, CPI-M leaders are yet to respond formally to Debbarma’s remarks, though party insiders hint that a counter-statement may soon follow.

As Tripura prepares for Janajatiya Gaurav Diwas, the event promises to be more than just a cultural observance—it has evolved into a showdown of ideologies where governance, legacy, and tribal pride intersect on a politically charged stage.
