Colonel (Retd) Kush Kumar Sharma resigned as Tripura Public Service Commission Chairman (TPSC) after his arrest in a drunken altercation with police guarding a minister, raising serious concerns over conduct, accountability, and institutional integrity in Tripura’s administration.

Colonel (Retired) Kush Kumar Sharma has resigned from the post of Chairman of the Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC). The resignation comes nearly a week after he and his son were arrested following an alleged drunken altercation with police personnel deployed for the security of a state minister.

Sources confirmed that Colonel Sharma met Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu at the Raj Bhavan on Tuesday, where he formally tendered his resignation letter. As per established constitutional and administrative procedures, the resignation was first submitted to the Governor, who subsequently forwarded it to the Government of Tripura for initiating the formal acceptance process.

The controversy erupted shortly after the conclusion of the much-publicised Prabashi Tripura Summit, an ambitious event hosted by the state government to attract investment and engagement from the Tripura diaspora. The timing of the incident drew considerable public attention, casting a shadow over the otherwise high-profile summit.

According to police sources, Colonel Sharma was accompanied by his son, Meghasis Sharma, when the incident occurred at a private hotel premises. Both were allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Trouble began when police personnel requested Sharma to move his vehicle to allow the official convoy of Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury to pass.

Instead of complying, Sharma reportedly reacted aggressively, shouting at the security personnel and issuing threats. Witnesses said the situation escalated rapidly, prompting the minister himself to approach Sharma in an attempt to de-escalate the confrontation. However, efforts to pacify him reportedly failed, and the argument soon turned physical.

Following the scuffle, police from the New Capital Complex Police Station rushed to the scene and arrested both Sharma and his son. A specific case was registered against them for creating public nuisance and breaching the security protocol of a serving minister. The incident raised serious concerns over conduct, discipline, and propriety expected from a constitutional office holder.

Colonel Sharma, a retired army officer, was appointed as the TPSC Chairman to uphold integrity and fairness in public recruitment. His arrest and subsequent resignation have intensified debates on accountability, especially for individuals holding prestigious constitutional positions.

While no official statement has yet been released by Sharma regarding his resignation, government sources indicated that the process to appoint an interim or new chairman may be initiated soon to ensure that the functioning of the Tripura Public Service Commission remains uninterrupted.

The episode has also drawn political reactions, with opposition parties demanding stricter standards of conduct for constitutional authorities and the ruling establishment maintaining that due legal and administrative processes are being followed.

As investigations continue, the incident remains a reminder of how personal misconduct can have far-reaching consequences on public trust and institutional credibility.
