A 30-year-old woman with a bullet lodged near her heart was saved after successful emergency cardiac surgery at AGMC and GBP Hospital in Agartala, showcasing advanced medical expertise and rapid response by doctors.
In a remarkable display of medical expertise and swift emergency response, doctors at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital successfully saved the life of a young woman who sustained a critical gunshot injury that left a bullet lodged near her heart.
The patient, identified as 30-year-old Deepali Debbarma of Shyamananda Para, was rushed to GBP Hospital by her brother at around 10:30 pm on Saturday night. According to hospital sources, her brother informed medical staff that she had been accidentally hit by a bullet, following which her condition rapidly deteriorated.
Upon arrival at the emergency department, doctors immediately initiated critical diagnostic procedures. Initial assessments revealed the gravity of the injury, prompting the emergency team to consult cardiothoracic and vascular surgery (CTVS) specialists without delay. Given the life-threatening nature of the injury, the hospital called in Dr Kanak Narayan Bhattacharjee, a senior CTVS specialist from the Department of CTVS and Interventional Radiology.
After a thorough evaluation, Dr Bhattacharjee determined that immediate surgical intervention was essential to prevent fatal complications. A high-risk emergency cardiac procedure was planned, considering the bullet had penetrated deep and was lodged within the pericardium, the protective sac surrounding the heart.
A 10-member multidisciplinary surgical team was swiftly assembled under Dr Bhattacharjee’s supervision. Using advanced cath lab fluoroscopy imaging technology, the team precisely located the metallic bullet. The surgery was conducted with extreme caution due to the proximity of the foreign object to vital cardiac structures.
The complex procedure was successful, and the bullet was safely removed without causing damage to the heart muscle or major blood vessels. Doctors confirmed that the patient responded well to the surgery and was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for close monitoring.
Hospital authorities stated that Deepali Debbarma is now out of danger and remains under continuous medical supervision. Her condition is described as stable, and doctors are optimistic about her recovery.
