The Tripura government has announced a comprehensive plan to tackle the shortage of faculty in colleges across the state and improve the quality of education. Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, who also serves as the state’s Education Minister, outlined the steps during the winter session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Friday.

The government will appoint 200 Assistant Professors and 12 part-time professors while also proposing the recruitment of 201 more Assistant Professors through the Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC).

Current Status of Higher Education in Tripura

Tripura currently has 31 General Degree Colleges catering to 72,009 students. However, the state faces a shortage of teaching staff despite having 787 Post Graduate Teachers (PGTs), Assistant Professors, Associate Professors, and Professors.

To bridge this gap, the government has already taken several measures:

  • A proposal to TPSC for the recruitment of 201 Assistant Professors.
  • Approval from the Finance Department to appoint 200 Assistant Professors for General Degree Colleges.
  • Appointment of 710 guest lecturers to ensure classes continue without interruption.

“All appointments will be made as per cabinet norms, and the recruitment process will commence soon,” Dr. Saha assured.

Focus on Master’s Programs and Part-Time Faculty

The Chief Minister highlighted progress in introducing Master’s Degree courses in six General Degree Colleges, which required hiring additional faculty.

  • 12 part-time professors have been appointed to support these postgraduate programs.
  • Current teachers and professors are performing their duties following the UGC 2023 guidelines, ensuring the delivery of quality education.

Commitment to Education Quality

Dr. Saha emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening higher education and addressing the faculty shortage to meet the growing needs of students in the state. “These measures aim to enhance learning outcomes and ensure that students receive the best possible education,” he stated.

The Chief Minister reiterated that the government’s initiatives are part of a broader effort to align Tripura’s higher education system with national standards and provide better opportunities for students pursuing higher studies.
