Members of nine social organizations jointly presented a deputation to the Director General of Police at the Police Headquarters on Tuesday, demanding the safety and security of minority Muslim families residing in Madhya Raiabari in Udaipur’s Killa area under Gomati district, Tripura.
Leaders of the delegation spoke to reporters, outlining the ongoing atrocities faced by the minority families in Raiabari. They highlighted that approximately 17 Muslim families in Madhya Raiabari had been experiencing extreme insecurity for an extended period. Since May 2023, they reported brutal attacks through various means, with families being forcefully evicted from their homes and lands in the name of religious differences.
The most recent attack occurred on December 23, 2023, where miscreants set houses on fire, causing damage to various crops, including rubber plantations. The attack resulted in injuries to several villagers, including a helpless woman. The delegation alleged that when the fire brigade arrived to douse the fire, miscreants obstructed their entry into the area. Furthermore, when villagers sought help, the police personnel present allegedly remained passive, acting as silent spectators.
The joint platform representing the social organizations voiced demands for the protection of minority families in Raiabari. The key demands include ensuring the safety of life and property of the minority families, resolving land disputes, and rehabilitating the families on the same land they currently occupy or identifying a suitable alternative for permanent resettlement.
Various organizations, including the Tripura Minority Development Council, Manipuri Students Youth Coordination Committee, Tripura Tapshili Jati Sangram Parishad, Peoples’ Movement for Tribal Rights, and Tripura Mahila Sangram Parishad, among others, participated in the joint initiative.
