Tripura’s development plans gain momentum as the NEC reviews key projects and allocates Rs. 14.22 crore for infrastructure, health, agriculture, and education. Ongoing initiatives include power projects, bus terminals, trauma centres, and more, reinforcing the NEC’s commitment to Tripura’s socio-economic growth.

In a move aimed at accelerating development in Tripura, several key proposals from the state government were discussed in a high-level meeting of the North Eastern Council (NEC) held on July 4 at the NEC Conference Hall in Shillong, Meghalaya. The meeting was chaired by NEC Secretary Satindra Kumar Balla and was attended by senior officials from Tripura’s Planning Department along with heads of various NEC divisions.

The meeting primarily focused on reviewing the progress and implementation status of various projects that the Tripura government had proposed under NEC schemes. These include funding under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS – Road Sector), NESIDS General, and NEC core funding programs.

According to an official press release, since its inception in 1971, the NEC has played a vital role in the infrastructural and socio-economic development of Tripura. The current review emphasized the continuation of this partnership through active collaboration and timely execution of multiple ongoing and upcoming projects.

Key Infrastructure and Health Projects

Some of the prominent projects discussed include the establishment of the Regional Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology and a diabetes research centre in Agartala. Additionally, trauma care centres are proposed at Kulai and Ambassa, alongside the Rukhia gas-based power project, which is expected to significantly enhance the state’s energy capacity.

Several infrastructure development initiatives are also in the pipeline, including the expansion and renovation of power substations and supply lines, the creation of an inter-state bus terminal at Chandrapur, and the development of an energy park in Agartala. Road construction initiatives across various districts were also brought up during the meeting, indicating a push towards improving intra-state connectivity.

NEC Allocates Rs. 14.22 Crore for Development Projects

The NEC has recently approved a financial package of Rs. 14.22 crore for several new developmental projects across Tripura. The funds are earmarked for diverse sectors such as agriculture, animal husbandry, rural development, education, and renewable energy.

Among the notable initiatives receiving funding are the establishment of pig breeding farms at Hawai Bari (Khowai district) and Jalefa (South Tripura district), and the implementation of essential services in the Ganganagar and Raishyabari RD Blocks. The projects also include excavation of ponds, renovation of water bodies, construction of six integrated seed processing plants, and two modern agri-markets.

To support the state’s agro-economy, an integrated packhouse will be constructed in Dhalai district, while the establishment of a brooder house and poultry hatchery has also been planned. Additionally, the Vivekananda Tripureshwari Vidyamandir School will receive funding for a new building to improve educational infrastructure.

Additional Funding and Focus on Skill Development

Beyond the Rs. 14.22 crore allocation, an additional Rs. 1.31 crore was sanctioned in June for infrastructure development. This includes Rs. 40 lakh for improving the infrastructure of a girls’ hostel in Gandhigram (West Tripura) and Rs. 91.55 lakh for constructing another girls’ hostel at Dhamma Deepa School in Manubankul (South Tripura).

The NEC also allocated funds for capacity-building programs such as a workshop on GI products, an international chemistry conference, and the installation of solar-powered irrigation pumps at government-operated orchid gardens.

NEC’s Commitment to Timely Execution

Emphasizing the need for faster project implementation, the NEC urged stakeholders to enhance workforce skills and ensure transparent fund utilization. The Council reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a steady flow of funds, which is crucial for the timely and efficient execution of these developmental projects. This renewed emphasis on performance and accountability is expected to catalyze socio-economic progress across Tripura.
