Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma urged unity among Tripura’s diverse communities, recalling Maharaja Bir Bikram’s legacy at his 117th birth anniversary. He stressed that divisions weaken the state, once globally respected, and called collective progress the true tribute to the visionary king.

Tipra Motha Party (TMP) supremo and royal scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma on Monday made a fervent appeal for unity among all communities of Tripura, urging people to rise above divisions of caste, creed, religion, and ethnicity in order to reclaim the state’s lost dignity and develop a stronger future.

Speaking at a programme commemorating the 117th birth anniversary of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur at Manikya Enclave, Agartala, Debbarma lamented that Tripura, once a respected kingdom under the Manikya dynasty, is now forced to “beg for every small demand” from the Union government. He attributed this dependency to the divisions created in the name of politics, community, and religion.

Remembering Maharaja Bir Bikram’s Legacy

Pradyot Bikram reminded the gathering of Maharaja Bir Bikram’s visionary leadership, which earned him the title of “Architect of Modern Tripura.” The king was instrumental in bringing education reforms, modern infrastructure, and global recognition to the princely state.

Highlighting Tripura’s glorious past, Debbarma recalled that nearly 90 years ago, Maharaja Bir Bikram was accorded the honour of meeting the then President of the United States—an achievement that reflected the state’s standing in the international arena.

“Today, for everything the state has to beg from Delhi because people are divided in the name of votes, religion, and community,” Debbarma remarked, drawing a stark contrast between the past and the present.

Unity as the Greatest Tribute

At the commemorative programme, the TMP leader stressed that the greatest tribute to Maharaja Bir Bikram would be for the people of Tripura to emulate his ideals of inclusiveness and unity.

“Today we have become Jamatias, Debbarmas, Reangs, Mizos, Kalais, Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, Bengalis, tribals and non-tribals, but forget one thing—no one is prospering when we are divided,” he said. “By begging, nothing will be achieved. If we raise our voice for our rights, it is not ego or communal; it is for the future of our next generation.”

Debbarma further reminded the audience that the ancestors of Tripura had fiercely defended their sovereignty against outside powers. They had resisted invasions by the Nawab of Bengal, fought back against Mughal advances, and even managed to retain independence during the British era despite diplomatic pressure and indirect interference.

“The people of Tripura were never conquered. Yet after the merger with India in 1949, we see the state lagging behind in various sectors now,” he said, calling for a renewed collective effort to bring progress.

Special Postal Cover Released

Monday’s programme at Manikya Enclave also witnessed the release of a Special Postal Cover in honour of Maharaja Bir Bikram. The release was done by Joseph Lalrinsailova, Postmaster General of the NE-1 region, in the presence of several distinguished guests including BJP MP from Tripura East, Kriti Devi Debbarman, Rajmata Bibhu Kumari Devi, and Pragya Deb Burman, convenor of INTACH Tripura Chapter.

Other dignitaries also praised the late king’s foresight and his role in shaping Tripura into a modern state, emphasizing that following his path of inclusivity and development would help the state overcome current challenges.

Exhibition Showcases Royal Legacy

To mark the occasion, a special photo exhibition on Maharaja Bir Bikram’s life and achievements was organized, alongside a display of warfare weapons symbolizing the kingdom’s resilient past.

The commemorations will continue across Tripura on Tuesday, with multiple events planned to pay homage to the revered king.

A Call for Inclusive Progress

Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma’s message resonated as a clarion call for the state to break away from divisive politics and identity-based rivalries. By invoking the legacy of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore, he underscored that Tripura’s path to prosperity lies in collective unity and a shared vision of progress.

“Tripura has always stood strong against external domination. Now, the challenge is internal—we must unite, speak up for our rights, and build a future that reflects the dreams of our ancestors and the aspirations of our children,” Debbarma concluded.
