IMD issues a heavy rainfall alert for Tripura with orange warnings in southern districts. Urban flooding, rising river levels, and infrastructure damage are major concerns. Authorities are on high alert as Belonia, Sabroom, and Udaipur face worsening flood-like situations amid persistent monsoon rains.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow to orange alert for Tripura, warning of widespread rain activity over the next 48 hours. Triggered by a persistent low-pressure system over Gangetic West Bengal and an active monsoon trough, the region is expected to experience light to moderate showers, with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several districts.

The IMD’s Agartala Centre has identified South Tripura as the most vulnerable area, forecasting over 21 cm of rain in isolated pockets. Gomati, Sipahijala, and West Tripura are also bracing for heavy to very heavy rainfall ranging between 7 to 20 cm. Other districts across the state are likely to witness moderate to heavy showers. Thunderstorms with lightning have been predicted in scattered regions, increasing the risk of weather-related disruptions.

Already, the monsoon onslaught has begun to affect daily life. In the last 24 hours, Belonia recorded 27 cm of rainfall and Bagafa received 13 cm, causing flooding in low-lying areas. Key towns like Agartala, Udaipur, Kamalasagar, and Sabroom have been placed on high alert due to the likelihood of urban flooding, road blockages, and damage to essential infrastructure and agriculture.

Emergency response teams have been mobilized, and residents have been advised to stay indoors during intense spells, avoid flood-prone zones, and follow regular updates from the IMD and disaster management officials.

A senior IMD official stated, “Heavy rainfall will continue across the southern districts of Tripura. Urban flooding, landslides in hilly areas, and crop loss are major risks during this period. People should be extremely cautious.”

The local administration has ramped up evacuation efforts in low-lying zones and set up temporary shelters for affected families. Alerts have been issued in South Tripura, Gomati, and Sepahijala districts, where the situation is reportedly worsening by the hour.

In Sabroom, reports indicate that 72 mm of rainfall was recorded by 8 AM Tuesday morning, with total rainfall expected to reach 120 mm by nightfall. “If the rains persist through the night, the Feni River may swell beyond safe limits. Currently, the water level remains below the danger mark,” a local official confirmed.

However, in Belonia, residents are expressing concern as continuous rainfall since Monday night has already brought the water level close to critical levels. “If this rain continues, we may see a flood-like situation by Wednesday,” a resident warned.

Similarly, in Udaipur, the water level in several reservoirs and drains has risen sharply, leading to water-logging in multiple neighborhoods. Areas like Jolaibari and Sonamura are also witnessing flood-like conditions, especially in low-lying localities.

The impact of the rain is being felt not only in rural zones but also in urban areas where traffic has slowed, tourist spots have shut down, and daily commerce has been disrupted. Damage to roads, homes, and farmland is being closely monitored by authorities.

The IMD has assured continuous monitoring of the weather system and is issuing updates at regular intervals. Authorities have emphasized the importance of community awareness and timely response to avoid large-scale displacement or casualties.

As the situation develops, the state’s disaster response force remains on standby, equipped with rescue gear, boats, and medical supplies to support affected regions.
