In a significant milestone for Tripura, the renowned ‘Matabari’s Peda’ and the vibrant traditional attire of the indigenous people, ‘Pachhra’ or ‘Rignai’, have been bestowed with the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) Tag. This development not only amplifies the ‘vocal for local’ initiative but also promises far-reaching implications for the state’s industrial and tourism sectors.

The news of these products receiving the GI Tag has sparked jubilation among citizens, with Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha taking to his social media handle to express his delight. In his statement, he announced, “I am delighted to announce that this time the GI Tag has been awarded to the special prasad ‘Peda’ of Mata Tripurasundari and ‘Rignai/Pachra’ worn by indigenous people.” He attributed the credit for this achievement to the individuals and organizations associated with these quintessentially Tripura-specific products.

Dr. Saha extended his heartfelt congratulations to the Matabari Mahila Cluster Level Bahumukhi Sambay Samity Limited of Udaipur and Dewanbari Mahila Cluster Bahumukhi Sambay Samity Limited for their remarkable achievement. He commended them for their efforts in achieving self-reliance through self-help groups and for bestowing upon the state a distinctive identity on the global stage.

In further celebration of this milestone, Chief Minister Dr. Saha visited Mata Bari and met with the peda sellers. Reflecting on the significance of the occasion, he expressed, “Today is indeed a joyous day. I came here for the Lok Sabha election campaign in Gomati District. We always feel proud of Mata Bari peda and used to take it outside the state. The flavor is unparalleled.” He emphasized his elation at the long-awaited recognition of Mata Bari peda with the GI tag, along with the recognition bestowed upon the indigenous people’s Pachra or Rignai.

Dr. Saha highlighted Tripura’s progress in embracing the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative, attributing it to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership. He underscored how Tripura’s advancement is gradually unfolding, with two more products from the state receiving the GI tag, signaling a path towards prosperity and recognition on a national and global scale.
