Sabroom, Thursday: A five-member delegation led by Sharad Chandra, Commissioner (Flood Control) of the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti, visited Sabroom in South Tripura district on Thursday. The team assessed the initiatives taken by the central government to control erosion along the banks of the Feni River and reviewed the infrastructure of the water treatment plant near the Maitree Setu.

The water treatment plant near the Maitree Setu was constructed as part of an agreement signed between India and Bangladesh to use Feni River water for drinking purposes. The plant plays a crucial role in providing clean drinking water to the residents of Sabroom and surrounding areas.

During their visit, the central team entered the Feni Riverbank through the border gate at the Gangphira area near Maitree Setu to take stock of the ground situation and assess the practical challenges. This visit was part of the preparatory efforts for the upcoming meeting of the India-Bangladesh Joint River Commission.

The India-Bangladesh Joint River Commission, established in 1972, aims to ensure effective joint efforts in maximizing the benefits from common river systems. The upcoming meeting is expected to address various matters pertaining to water resource cooperation between the two countries.

The Feni River, which forms part of the India-Bangladesh border, originates in the South Tripura district and passes through Sabroom town before flowing into Bangladesh. The river has been a focal point for both countries due to its significance in providing water for drinking and irrigation purposes.

The central government's initiatives to control erosion along the Feni River banks are crucial in preventing land loss and ensuring the safety of the local population. The delegation's visit highlights the importance of these efforts and the need for continued collaboration between India and Bangladesh to address water resource challenges.

The Maitree Setu, a bridge connecting Sabroom in India with Ramgarh in Bangladesh, symbolizes the growing bilateral relations and friendly ties between the two countries. The water treatment plant near the Maitree Setu is a testament to the successful cooperation between India and Bangladesh in addressing shared water resource issues.

As the central team continues to assess the situation on the ground, their findings will play a vital role in shaping the discussions and decisions at the upcoming India-Bangladesh Joint River Commission meeting. The visit underscores the commitment of both countries to work together in managing their shared water resources and ensuring the well-being of their citizens.
