Sepahijala district in Tripura declares 10 villages as ‘Child Marriage Free’, marking a major social reform. With the launch of Mission Sankalp, the administration aims to make the entire district free from child marriage through awareness, education, and community action.
In a landmark move aimed at eradicating child marriage and promoting the rights and safety of children, the Sepahijala district administration in Tripura has declared ten villages as ‘Child Marriage Free Villages’. This significant declaration marks a progressive shift in community-driven efforts to combat one of the most deep-rooted social issues affecting rural India.
The announcement was formally made on June 29 during a virtual foundation stone laying and inauguration ceremony held at Bishalgarh New Town Hall. District Magistrate of Sepahijala, Dr. Siddharth Shiv Jaiswal, made the declaration and emphasized the rigorous process that led to this achievement.
Out of a total of 178 villages in the district, the ten villages recognized as free from child marriage include:
Under Jampuijala RD Block: Promod Nagar, Doyarampara, Twima, JK Nagar, East Ratanpur, and West Ratanpur.
Under Charilam RD Block: Rambagar and Batharmura.
Under Nalchar RD Block: Rampada Para and Padmininagar.
A Rigorous Three-Tier Verification Process
According to the District Magistrate, the selection of these villages followed a meticulous three-tier verification process designed to ensure accuracy and credibility.
Initial Verification: Conducted by the respective Block Authorities, who gathered field data and village-level inputs.
Second-Level Scrutiny: Managed by the concerned Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) and their teams. This included site visits, stakeholder consultations, and community-level verification.
Final Approval: The Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Sepahijala, conducted the final review. Villages were only declared “Child Marriage Free” after confirming that no child marriage had occurred there in the past six months and all criteria were met.

As part of the initiative to recognize grassroots leadership and strengthen local governance, the Pradhans and Secretaries of the 10 villages were felicitated during the event. Their dedication and active involvement were instrumental in mobilizing communities, promoting awareness, and ensuring compliance with child protection laws.
Launch of “Mission Sankalp” – A Vision for a Child Marriage Free District
In a forward-thinking move, the district administration also unveiled a new initiative titled “Mission Sankalp”, aimed at declaring the entire Sepahijala district as child marriage free in the near future. This comprehensive program is being launched in collaboration with departments of Education, Social Welfare & Social Education, and other line departments.
Focus Areas of Mission Sankalp
The multi-pronged strategy of Mission Sankalp includes:
Community Awareness and Sensitization: Strengthening communication and outreach to educate families on the dangers of child marriage.
Empowering Girls Through Education: Increasing access to education and vocational training for girls to delay marriage and enhance self-reliance.
Institutional Monitoring and Reporting: Creating a robust mechanism to detect and report early marriage attempts.
Village-Level Child Protection Committees: Forming and activating committees to ensure community-based monitoring.
Engagement of Local Institutions: Schools, Anganwadi centers, and Panchayati Raj Institutions will be engaged in continuous awareness drives.

Officials believe that this initiative will act as a model for other districts not just in Tripura, but across the country. “The recognition of grassroots leaders and the introduction of Mission Sankalp reflect the commitment of the district administration to build a safe, educated, and empowered future for every child,” a senior official stated.
