Aizawl, the capital city of Mizoram, is set to become the fourth capital in the northeastern region of India to be connected by a railway link, with the Bairabi-Sairang new railway line project nearing completion. According to officials, the project is in its advanced stages and is expected to be operational within the next five months.

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is overseeing the construction of the 51.38 km broad gauge railway line, which extends from Bairabi, near Assam's Hailakandi district, to Sairang, situated close to Aizawl. The project, estimated to cost over Rs 8,210 crore, is a significant step towards enhancing connectivity in the northeastern states.

With this development, Aizawl will join the ranks of Assam's main city of Guwahati (close to the capital, Dispur), Tripura's capital Agartala, and Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh (adjacent to Itanagar) — all of which have been a part of the railway network for several years.

On Tuesday, Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of NFR, informed that NFR General Manager for Construction, Arun Kumar Chaudhary, conducted a detailed inspection of the Bairabi-Sairang project. Chaudhary, accompanied by senior railway officials from the NFR headquarters in Maligaon near Guwahati, assessed the progress at various construction sites. His inspection included stations like Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and the Sairang station yard, as well as the construction of bridges and tunnels integral to the project.

Sharma highlighted that the Bairabi-Sairang railway line is crucial for linking Aizawl to the rest of the country, thereby boosting trade and mobility. The project has been divided into four distinct sections:

  1. Bairabi-Hortoki
  2. Hortoki-Kawnpui
  3. Kawnpui-Mualkhang
  4. Mualkhang-Sairang

Notably, the Bairabi–Hortoki section of the line was commissioned in July of the previous year, marking a significant milestone in the project's timeline. The NFR is reportedly making every effort to ensure the timely completion of the remaining sections, aiming to commission the entire project as soon as possible.

In addition to inspecting the Bairabi-Sairang project, Chaudhary also conducted a "window trailing inspection" on Monday, covering the route from Sabroom in southern Tripura to Agartala station. The Sabroom railway station holds strategic importance as the southernmost railway station near the Bangladesh border. During his visit, Chaudhary also toured the Sabroom Land Port, which is pivotal in enhancing logistics, boosting bilateral trade, and creating economic opportunities for both India and Bangladesh.

Further, the NFR General Manager met with Tripura's Chief Minister Manik Saha in Agartala to discuss the progress of various ongoing projects aimed at expanding and upgrading the railway infrastructure in the state. The meeting underscored the importance of these projects in promoting economic growth and improving connectivity across the northeastern region.

The timely completion of the Bairabi-Sairang railway line is expected to significantly enhance Mizoram's connectivity with other parts of India, facilitating trade, tourism, and development in the region.
