The Supreme Court has extended the deadline for in-service teachers to acquire the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) qualification until August 31, 2028. The decision, delivered by a Bench headed by Justice Dipankar Datta, provides additional time while maintaining mandatory eligibility standards for teachers across educational institutions.
The Supreme Court has extended the deadline for acquiring the mandatory Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) qualification by one additional year. Teachers who are yet to clear the examination will now have until August 31, 2028, to obtain the required certification.
The decision comes as part of a judgment delivered by a Bench headed by Justice Dipankar Datta while hearing a series of review petitions. The ruling revises the earlier deadline of August 31, 2027, giving eligible teachers more time to comply with the mandatory qualification requirements.
According to reports, the Supreme Court acknowledged the practical challenges faced by many teachers in completing the TET qualification within the previously prescribed timeline. By extending the deadline, the apex court has sought to provide relief to educators while ensuring that educational standards remain intact.
The development was highlighted by The Hindu in a post on X, stating that the Supreme Court had granted an additional year for teachers to acquire the TET qualification. The extension is expected to benefit a large number of serving teachers who continue to work in educational institutions but have not yet cleared the examination.
Despite granting more time, the Supreme Court made it clear that obtaining the TET qualification remains compulsory under the existing norms. The court emphasized that the extension should not be interpreted as a relaxation of standards but rather as an opportunity for teachers to fulfill the eligibility requirements without risking their service status.
Education experts believe the decision will help reduce anxiety among teachers while encouraging them to complete the qualification process within the revised timeframe. The move is also expected to support educational institutions by preventing disruptions that could arise from large-scale non-compliance with eligibility regulations.
