A shocking case of moral policing in Kamalpur where a woman was garlanded with shoes and paraded publicly. Police have launched an investigation after the viral video sparked nationwide outrage over human rights violations.

A disturbing incident of alleged moral policing has surfaced from the Kamalpur subdivision, where a middle-aged woman was subjected to extreme public humiliation by a group of villagers, raising serious concerns over law, human rights, and social justice. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, has sparked widespread outrage after video clips of the act went viral on social media platforms.

According to official sources and local accounts, the woman was accused by villagers of being involved in an extra-marital relationship. Acting as self-appointed custodians of morality, a frenzied mob dragged her out of her residence, forcibly garlanded her with shoes, and paraded her through the village as a form of public “punishment.” The act was recorded and later circulated online, triggering sharp criticism from citizens across the country.

Eyewitnesses stated that after enduring prolonged physical and mental torture, the woman collapsed on the village road due to exhaustion and trauma. She was later abandoned by the mob in a distressed condition. The police intervened only after the visuals began circulating widely, prompting questions over the delay in administrative response.

Confirming the incident, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Kamalpur, Samudra Debbarma, stated that the matter is under investigation. “A woman was publicly insulted and garlanded with shoes by a group of villagers. Once the police received information, she was immediately shifted to a local hospital for medical treatment. Legal action will be initiated once the victim files a formal complaint,” he said.

Local sources revealed that the woman, who is married and has children, allegedly developed a relationship with a local meat shop owner and had eloped with him nearly one and a half months ago. The couple was reportedly staying in rented accommodation in Agartala. Last Thursday, the woman returned to her marital home. Initially, her husband refused to accept her, but following insistence from their children and her mother-in-law, she was allowed to stay in an outhouse at the rear of the family property.

Her return reportedly angered several villagers, who allegedly took the law into their own hands. On Saturday morning, they launched an unprovoked attack, dragging her into public view and subjecting her to degrading treatment. Unable to withstand the humiliation and abuse, she lost consciousness on the road.

Police later shifted her to Bimal Sinha Memorial Hospital for preliminary treatment, after which she was referred to Dhalai District Hospital for advanced medical care. Doctors have confirmed that her condition is currently stable.

Human rights activists and social media users have condemned the incident as a gross violation of human dignity and constitutional rights. Many questioned under what authority villagers could enforce such punishment, calling for strict legal action against those involved.

The incident once again highlights the persistent issue of mob justice and moral policing in rural areas, emphasizing the urgent need for awareness, legal accountability, and stronger law enforcement to prevent such inhumane acts.
