Benchmark domestic equity indices, the Sensex and the Nifty, ended marginally lower today, marking a fourth consecutive session of losses. The Sensex dipped 31 points, to close at 85 thousand 107, while the Nifty fell 46 points, to settle at 25 thousand 986. The broader market indices at the Bombay Stock Exchange also edged down. The Mid-Cap index lost over 0.9 per cent, while the Small-Cap index declined over 0.4 per cent.
In the Sensex pack, 20 out of 30 companies edged downward. Among the top laggards, Bharat Electronics Limited shed over 2.1 per cent, Titan fell almost 1.9 per cent and Mahindra and Mahindra lost 1.8 per cent. In the top gainers, Tata Consultancy Services surged 1.4 per cent, ICICI Bank rose almost 1.4 per cent and Infosys added over 1.1 per cent.
Across sectoral indices at the BSE, 16 out of 21 sectors ended with losses. Among the key decliners, Capital Goods slipped 1.3 per cent, Consumer Durables dipped over 1.2 per cent and Auto dropped over 1.1 per cent. Among the top gainers, Focused IT as well as IT, both gained 0.8 per cent, Teck rose 0.4 per cent, and Telecommunication added 0.3 per cent.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was negative, as shares of 2,681 companies declined, 1,481 advanced, and 154 remained unchanged.
