RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat has called for greater gender equality, women’s leadership, and action-driven change. Speaking at a book launch, he emphasized women’s equal role in decision-making, urged liberation from regressive customs, and highlighted inclusive leadership as the way forward ahead of the RSS centenary in 2025.

In a reflection on societal transformation and evolving gender roles, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Dr. Mohan Bhagwat has made a strong call for gender equality, women’s leadership, and inclusive decision-making within the Sangh and across wider civil society. His remarks came during the launch of the book “Tan Samarpit, Man Samarpit”, where he highlighted the central role of women in shaping India’s social and cultural progress.

Bhagwat asserted that women are not only equal participants in society but also a guiding force behind meaningful change. Recalling a recent query from Jaipur, he said: “I was asked how many women are in the Sangh. I replied that at the very least, the number of women is equal to the number of our swayamsevaks.” His words underline the growing presence of women in core leadership groups and key implementation committees of the RSS, an organisation historically seen as male-dominated.

He further stressed that societal progress depends on the equal participation of both genders. “In all activities carried out for the welfare of society, men and women work together. Even in the core group, leadership roles are held by women,” Bhagwat said, signaling an important shift in the Sangh’s internal outlook toward women’s involvement.

Women as Catalysts of Change

Bhagwat’s statements are in line with his earlier address in Solapur, Maharashtra, where he urged society to move beyond regressive traditions that limit women’s potential. “Empowering women is essential for national progress,” he noted. “God has given women all the qualities He has given to men—and more. They can do everything men can, and often more.”

This emphasis on women’s capability challenges deep-rooted patriarchal norms and reflects Bhagwat’s evolving approach toward gender equality within India’s socio-political framework. His remarks also come at a time when debates on women’s rights, representation, and safety dominate public discourse.

From Words to Action

Highlighting the importance of lived practice over rhetoric, Bhagwat stressed that true transformation cannot be achieved through slogans or symbolic gestures alone. “Knowledge alone doesn’t bring change. Change must come through action, which requires a change of mind,” he said.

He called on RSS volunteers to embody these ideals in their daily lives, serving as role models for others. According to him, only through personal example can individuals inspire genuine change within their communities.

A Legacy of Service and Leadership

In his address, Bhagwat also reflected on the contributions of the early RSS pracharaks, who worked tirelessly in difficult conditions without seeking recognition or rewards. Their dedication, he said, was not driven by the desire for fame but by a way of life rooted in service and sacrifice.

“Ideals are like stars—we may not reach them, but they guide our path,” he said. “To walk that path, people need relatable companions who lead by example.”

This analogy highlighted the enduring value of principles in guiding collective action, while also emphasizing the need for leadership that is approachable and grounded in real-life experiences.

A Transformative Vision Ahead of Centenary

Bhagwat’s comments signal a noticeable shift in tone from traditional RSS narratives, often criticized for being rigid and conservative. His focus on inclusive leadership, family engagement, and women-led change appears to be steering the Sangh toward a broader, more participatory vision.

As the RSS prepares to mark its centenary in October 2025, these remarks acquire greater significance. The organisation, which has played a key role in shaping India’s socio-political landscape, seems to be acknowledging the necessity of adapting to changing societal expectations, especially regarding gender inclusivity.

With this forward-looking vision, Bhagwat positions the Sangh not just as a custodian of tradition but also as a potential driver of progressive change. By embracing women’s leadership and equality, the RSS chief has opened the door to a more balanced and responsive model of nation-building.
