In 2023, North Tripura district witnessed a notable reduction in accidents, providing a positive shift in the overall safety scenario. However, this positive development is juxtaposed with a concerning rise in drug addiction cases, highlighting the multifaceted challenges faced by the district.
District Police Superintendent Bhanupada Chakraborty addressed the achievements and challenges encountered by the district police during the year. According to Chakraborty, the number of accidents resulting in fatalities significantly decreased from 24 in 2022 to 14 in 2023. The overall number of accident cases also witnessed a decline, dropping from 53 to 33 during the same period.
While there was a slight decrease in cases related to Crimes Against Women (CAW), from 112 in 2022 to 107 in 2023, there was a substantial increase in cases related to Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS). NDPS cases rose from 71 to 84, indicating a growing challenge in the realm of drug abuse.
Chakraborty expressed concern over the persistent issue of accidents and the alarming surge in drug abuse. Despite implementing stringent measures, accidents continue to pose a threat to public safety. In response to this, the police have taken proactive steps by organizing awareness camps in schools, colleges, and clubs to educate the community about road safety.
Highlighting the collaborative nature needed to address these challenges effectively, Chakraborty urged parents and society at large to actively participate in these awareness initiatives. Recognizing the shared responsibility in creating a safer environment, the District Police Superintendent emphasized the need for a united front against accidents and drug abuse. The police’s commitment to ensuring public safety is evident in the efforts to both enforce the law and engage the community in fostering a culture of responsible behavior on the roads and combating drug addiction.
