BJP leader Rebati Mohan Tripura criticizes Pradyot Kishore Debbarma’s ‘One Northeast’ campaign, alleging attempts to fuel division and undermine Tripura’s unity. He highlights development under the Modi government and questions the ADC’s performance ahead of the 2026 elections.
Rebati Mohan Tripura, senior BJP leader and former Member of Parliament, launched a scathing attack on TIPRA Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma over the latter’s ongoing ‘One Northeast’ campaign, accusing him of promoting political confusion and fostering narratives that could undermine Tripura’s unity.
Speaking at a press conference held at the BJP state headquarters on Monday, Rebati argued that the campaign stemmed from a “fear of losing existence” among certain regional leaders.
Addressing journalists, Rebati asserted that the BJP-led government at the Centre has consistently upheld the principle of national unity under the vision of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat, which aims to integrate development across all states and regions. “When we talk about ‘Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat’, we talk about development of the entire nation,” he said. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is working to unite and uplift the whole country, and the Northeast is an integral part of that mission. So why raise terms like One Northeast?”
Rebati alleged that those pushing the ‘One Northeast’ narrative were attempting to deflect attention from their own shortcomings. He claimed that such leaders were consciously trying to erase the long-standing demand for Greater Tipraland from their political vocabulary, while simultaneously provoking unrest through inconsistent and inflammatory statements.
Calling for caution, he urged the people of Tripura to acknowledge the extensive development achieved under the “double-engine government” led by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha. He accused regional leaders of “playing politics with the sentiments of the Tiprasa people” to regain relevance, especially at a time when the state has witnessed substantial progress across infrastructure, education, connectivity, and law and order.
Rebati firmly rejected any possibility of dividing Tripura or creating a separate state. “Creating a new state or dividing a small state like Tripura is not realistic,” he stated. While acknowledging that visiting New Delhi to raise issues was a democratic right, he emphasized that the Tipra Accord did not contain any reference to ‘Tipraland.’ “Then why repeatedly demand the division of the state?” he questioned.
He further accused Pradyot of shifting political stances depending on convenience, saying, “When he was in Congress, he said one thing; now he says another. After ten or fifteen years in politics, will he again claim it was all a mistake?” Rebati argued that such inconsistent positions weakened the credibility of those championing identity-based campaigns.
The BJP leader also criticized the functioning of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC), currently under TIPRA Motha’s administration. He claimed that development under the ADC had stagnated due to a lack of financial discipline and failure to adhere to constitutional norms.
“Where are the schools and colleges?” he asked. “What development has been achieved under the ADC? Conduct an audit. There is no shortage of funds, but financial discipline is absent. Instead, attempts are being made to fool people and incite unrest.”
Reflecting on Tripura’s changing landscape, Rebati recalled that during his college years, both Tripura and Assam were barely recognized outside the Northeast. Today, he said, the region has not only gained national recognition but also global visibility.
“Farmers are exporting pineapples, jackfruit, and other produce abroad. The Look East Policy has transformed into the Act East Policy, bringing highways, railways, and modern infrastructure to the region. Prime Minister Modi has completely transformed the Northeast. Then what does One Northeast mean?” he asked.
Rebati emphasized that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Manik Saha, Tripura has witnessed major advancements: a sharp reduction in extremism, enhanced connectivity, improved governance standards, and increased national recognition.
Touching on the upcoming 2026 ADC elections, Rebati said that “time will reveal the alliances,” hinting that political equations might shift ahead of the polls.
