Ranjit Kumar Das assumes charge as Assam Assembly Speaker, promising neutrality, democratic values, cooperation with Opposition MLAs, and smooth legislative proceedings while emphasizing the crucial role of media in strengthening democracy across Assam.
A commitment to democratic values, neutrality, and cooperation marked the beginning of the new tenure of Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Ranjit Kumar Das on Thursday as he formally assumed charge for the second time and pledged to conduct the proceedings of the House by taking both treasury and Opposition members into confidence.
Speaking to reporters shortly after taking over the responsibility, Das stated that the Assembly must function in a manner where the aspirations, concerns, and expectations of the people of Assam are reflected meaningfully in legislative discussions. He stressed that maintaining the dignity of the House and ensuring smooth proceedings would remain among his foremost priorities during his tenure.
The senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party said he would adopt a humanitarian and democratic approach while presiding over the Assembly and would ensure that all elected representatives, including Opposition legislators, receive fair opportunities to raise issues concerning the people.
Das asserted that democracy functions effectively only when every section of the House participates constructively in discussions and debates. According to him, cooperation between treasury benches and Opposition members is essential for strengthening parliamentary traditions and ensuring that public concerns are addressed responsibly.
“We will work by taking all Opposition MLAs into confidence. The hopes and aspirations of the people of Assam must find proper expression in the Assembly,” Das said while outlining his approach towards the functioning of the legislature.
The Speaker further noted that the government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma had consistently handled public issues with sympathy and accountability, adding that he would continue to uphold the same spirit while presiding over House proceedings.
Das also underlined the importance of maintaining democratic traditions and parliamentary discipline within the Assembly. He said all matters concerning citizens would be viewed with a humanitarian perspective and that the Assembly would continue functioning in a manner beneficial to the people of the state.
During his interaction with journalists, Das reflected on his earlier association with the media before entering active politics. Recalling his professional experience with the North East Media Corporation, he said his background in journalism helped him maintain close relations with the media fraternity over the years.
According to Das, speaking to journalists and interacting with the press has always come naturally to him because of his earlier professional experiences in the media sector. He said he often remembers his former colleagues from journalism while addressing public meetings and official programmes.
The Speaker also highlighted the critical role played by the media in preserving democratic values and strengthening communication between the government and the public. He described the media as one of the key pillars of democracy alongside the legislature and executive.
Das observed that without the press, it would be difficult for governments and public institutions to effectively communicate policies, welfare measures, and important issues to society. He said the media continuously carries democratic discourse forward and acts as a bridge between the administration and the people.
“The media continuously carries democratic discourse forward. Without the media, we cannot reach people with what we do or what needs to be done,” he remarked.
Political observers believe Das’s remarks indicate an attempt to ensure greater cooperation inside the Assembly amid evolving political dynamics in Assam. His assurance regarding inclusive proceedings and coordination with Opposition legislators is expected to contribute to smoother legislative functioning in the coming sessions of the House.
