Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the rapid progress of Northeast India under his government, citing transformative measures to connect the region with the country’s growth story. Speaking at the inauguration of the ‘Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav,’ a cultural festival celebrating the vibrancy of the northeastern states, Modi underscored the region’s role in shaping the future of eastern India.
The Prime Minister noted that previous governments neglected the development of the Northeast due to its smaller population and fewer votes. “For decades, development was weighed against votes. Northeastern states, having fewer votes and parliamentary seats, were ignored. However, we took every possible step to change this narrative,” Modi said.
He credited the late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for establishing the first dedicated Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and allocating 20% of every ministry’s budget to the region’s development. He also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the Northeast, envisioning cities like Guwahati, Shillong, Imphal, and Itanagar as emerging growth hubs akin to Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, DoNER Minister, and other northeastern leaders attended the inaugural ceremony at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
Spotlight on Northeast India’s Cultural and Economic Richness
The three-day festival, held for the first time, is designed to showcase the Northeast’s cultural, economic, and artistic diversity. The eight states—Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim—are collectively referred to as ‘Ashtalakshmi,’ symbolizing prosperity.
The event features exhibitions, state-specific pavilions, and technical sessions aimed at fostering growth in handicrafts, handlooms, tourism, and agricultural products. A key highlight is the ‘Investors Roundtable’ and buyer-seller meets, expected to generate on-the-spot sales of ₹2 crore and over 50 bulk orders, creating significant opportunities for artisans and businesses.
Traditional Arts and Global Fashion
A Design Conclave and fashion shows at the Mahotsav are showcasing the rich handloom traditions of the region, including Muga silk from Assam and Eri silk stoles. The fusion of contemporary design with traditional textiles is a major attraction, with top designers collaborating with local artisans to present unique ensembles.
The discussions on sustainable fashion and the global potential of Northeast textiles aim to elevate the region’s handloom industry to international markets.
Cultural Extravaganza and Gastronomy
Daily cultural performances, including Assam’s Bihu dance and Nagaland’s war dances, highlight the Northeast’s artistic heritage. Visitors are also treated to indigenous cuisines, offering a sensory journey through the region’s culinary traditions.
Prime Minister Modi concluded his speech with a vision for the Northeast as a beacon of India’s growth, celebrating the region’s integration into the nation’s development narrative. The Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav promises not only to promote cultural pride but also to create lasting economic opportunities for the Northeast.
