Tripura CM Dr. Manik Saha says 4,879 Graduate and Post-Graduate Teachers were recruited since 2018, while fresh recruitment is underway to fill vacant teaching posts across elementary and secondary schools.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Thursday informed the state Assembly that the government has recruited 4,879 Graduate Teachers (GTs) and Post-Graduate Teachers (PGTs) between the 2018-19 and 2025-26 academic years as part of efforts to strengthen the state’s education system.
The Chief Minister made the statement while participating in a discussion on a notice raised in the public interest during the second half of the Assembly session. The notice, concerning the shortage of teachers in schools across Tripura, was brought by Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury.
Dr. Saha said the government has taken several measures to address vacancies and improve the availability of teachers in schools. Under the Directorate of Secondary Education, 1,413 Post-Graduate Teachers and 1,471 Graduate Teachers have been appointed since 2018.
In addition to the recruitment of GTs and PGTs, the government has also appointed 145 Special Educators, 117 School Librarians and 105 Physical Education Teachers, the Chief Minister said.
He also highlighted steps taken to ensure that students studying in schools under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) do not face disruption because of teacher shortages. According to Dr. Saha, 2,684 teachers from various state government-run schools have been deputed to TTAADC-administered schools.
The Chief Minister said the process of filling vacant teaching positions in both elementary and secondary education has already started. The government has also initiated steps to recruit 352 pre-primary teachers. Following completion of the selection test, the document verification process for these posts is currently underway.
Recruitment efforts are also being expanded for primary and upper-primary levels through the Teachers’ Recruitment Board, Tripura (TRBT). For Assistant Teachers (Primary)/Undergraduate Teachers for Classes I to V through TET-I, requisitions have been submitted to the TRBT for filling 1,036 vacant posts.
Similarly, requisitions have been sent for the recruitment of 1,020 Graduate Teachers/Assistant Teachers for Classes V to VIII through TET-II. The recruitment process for another 700 Graduate Teacher (STGT) posts is also underway, according to the Chief Minister.
The government’s latest recruitment figures and ongoing selection processes come amid concerns over teacher shortages raised inside the Assembly. The administration has sought to combine recruitment with measures aimed at ensuring that schools, particularly those in areas administered by the TTAADC, have adequate teaching support.
Dr. Saha said the government views teacher recruitment as more than merely an employment exercise. He described teachers as central to strengthening classrooms and shaping the future of students across the state.
“Recruiting a teacher means strengthening a classroom, illuminating a child’s future and making tomorrow’s Tripura stronger,” the Chief Minister said.
He added that his government would continue working with this vision, stressing that ensuring access to quality education for every child remains one of its major priorities.

With several recruitment processes currently underway, the government is seeking to address existing vacancies while strengthening teaching resources across different levels of school education in Tripura. The ongoing recruitment drives are expected to play a role in improving classroom availability and supporting uninterrupted education for students across the state.
