In a major achievement once again in healthcare service in the state Tripura doctors successfully conducted an extremely complex cancer surgery on a 32-year-old woman’s head which involved critical skull bone with spreading cancerous tumour. This was for the first time such operation was done in Tripura.
The operation was conducted under the leadership cancer specialist and MS of ABV-RC Dr. Gautam Majumder , specialist neuro surgeon Dr. Siddha Reddy, Dr. Ashish Kumar Gupta, Dr. Mrinal Devavarma and others.
Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha greeted the doctors for the success in such a complex medical surgery in done in the state.
The eight hours long hugely complicated surgery was done on the massively deformed cancerous skull at the Neurosurgical Operation Theatre of AGMC on Wednesday. The operation was done jointly by Surgical Oncology of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer (ABV-RC) Hospital and Neuro Surgical Team of GBP Hospital. As many as 10 doctors from GB Hospital and ABV-RC Hospital took part in the surgery.
“Surgical Oncology team ABV RCC and Neurosurgery team of GB Hospital removed the diseased portion of the scalp along with underlying skull bone. After the operation, the skull is reconstructed with a special mesh of titanium metal in the empty space of the cancerous skull. The skin on the top of the skull had to be replaced”, Dr Majumder said.
On cost involved, Dr Majumder said, “Usually such an operation costs Rs 5 lakh. However, the cost, in this case, was only Rs 50,000 for essential consumables through Ayushman Bharat Scheme”.
