CPI(M) leader and Tripura Opposition Leader Jitendra Chaudhury says discussions on a possible Left Front-Congress electoral understanding remain ongoing ahead of the urban local body elections. A final decision is expected before the November 10 nomination withdrawal deadline.

With the urban local body elections in Tripura entering a crucial phase, Leader of the Opposition and CPI(M) State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury has indicated that discussions on a possible electoral understanding between the Left Front and the Congress are still underway. He expressed hope that a final decision could be reached within the next couple of days, before the November 10 deadline for withdrawal of nominations.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Chaudhury said negotiations among opposition parties were continuing with the primary objective of preventing the division of anti-BJP votes. He maintained that a coordinated electoral strategy would strengthen the opposition’s challenge to the ruling BJP in the upcoming municipal and Nagar Panchayat elections across the state.

According to the senior CPI(M) leader, the discussions are not limited to seat-sharing arrangements but are driven by a broader political objective of bringing opposition parties together. He said there was growing public sentiment in favour of opposition unity, with voters expecting political parties to present a common challenge to the BJP in urban local bodies.

Chaudhury claimed that the demand for opposition coordination was being heard across different parts of Tripura, including southern and northern districts. He said people dissatisfied with civic administration and the condition of urban infrastructure were looking for a united opposition platform capable of raising local issues and challenging the ruling party.

The Opposition Leader expressed optimism that mutually acceptable seat adjustments could be finalised in several important municipal areas and Nagar Panchayats before the nomination withdrawal deadline. He added that the Left Front had consistently supported the idea of fielding common opposition candidates wherever possible to avoid splitting votes among parties opposed to the BJP.

He further revealed that opposition parties had already reached understandings in certain urban centres, while negotiations in several other areas were progressing positively. According to Chaudhury, discussions continued even on Friday with leaders of major opposition parties outside the Left Front, and representatives of the participating parties had expressed willingness to explore possible electoral coordination.

However, the CPI(M) leader also raised concerns over the nomination process, alleging that opposition candidates had encountered difficulties while filing nomination papers in several municipal areas, including Mohanpur and other subdivisions.

He alleged that sections of the administration and election machinery had not acted impartially during the nomination phase. Chaudhury claimed that the process had not been conducted uniformly across all areas and that opposition candidates had faced obstacles in certain locations.

These allegations reflect the opposition leader’s claims and have not been independently established.

Targeting the BJP’s candidate selection process, Chaudhury also criticised the ruling party, alleging that some candidates fielded by the BJP had previously faced accusations from opposition parties over their alleged involvement in electoral irregularities during earlier elections. He questioned whether individuals facing such allegations should be entrusted with responsibilities in civic administration.

The CPI(M) State Secretary reiterated that the Left Front had advocated opposition unity from the beginning of the electoral process. He argued that contesting separately in areas where a common candidate could be fielded would risk dividing votes and potentially benefit the ruling BJP.

With the scrutiny of nomination papers underway and the November 10 withdrawal deadline approaching, Chaudhury described the coming days as crucial for determining the final electoral arrangements. He expressed confidence that discussions could produce agreements in several constituencies where seat-sharing negotiations remained unresolved.

The proposed Left-Congress understanding is expected to have significance in the political contest across Tripura’s municipal corporations, municipal councils and Nagar Panchayats. If finalised, the arrangement could bring opposition candidates together in selected urban constituencies to strengthen their electoral challenge against the BJP.

Concluding his remarks, Chaudhury said the objective of opposition unity extended beyond securing electoral victories for individual political parties. He described the initiative as an effort to defend democratic institutions and constitutional values while providing a stronger political alternative to the ruling party.

As political negotiations continue, attention is now focused on whether the Left Front and Congress can reach a mutually acceptable arrangement before November 10, when the withdrawal of nominations will bring greater clarity to the electoral contest.
