Floods and landslides across Northeast India have claimed 36 lives, with Assam worst-hit. Over 5 lakh people are affected, and thousands have taken shelter in relief camps. Heavy rain continues to batter Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and other states, causing widespread damage and displacement across the region.

The flood situation in the northeastern states of India has turned grim, with Assam being the worst-hit. As per reports from disaster management authorities, the combined death toll from floods, landslides, and torrential rain across six northeastern states has climbed to 36 since May 29, 2025.

Assam Faces Major Crisis

Assam continues to be the most severely affected state, where the flood situation deteriorated further over the past 24 hours. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 5.15 lakh people across 22 districts have been impacted. Over 1,254 villages have reported flooding, and 12,610.27 hectares of cropland have been submerged.

The situation has forced 1,85,389 people, including women and children, to take shelter in 479 relief camps and relief distribution centres. The state has so far reported 11 deaths, with drowning and landslides being the primary causes.

Arunachal Pradesh Battles Landslides and Floods

In Arunachal Pradesh, persistent monsoon rains have led to landslides and flash floods across 23 districts, affecting 938 people in 156 villages. The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) confirmed 10 fatalities, including one in Lohit district, where the body of Guptajit Bharali was recovered downstream after being swept away by a flooded stream.

Several districts, including West Kameng, Kamle, Papum Pare, Lower and Upper Subansiri, and Lohit, are facing landslides and flood-like conditions. Rivers and tributaries in these areas continue to flow above danger levels. Governor K T Parnaik urged people to remain cautious, especially in landslide-prone areas, and directed district administrations to implement night-time movement restrictions in high-risk zones.

Flood Impact in Manipur Escalates

In Manipur, although no deaths have been reported yet, more than 19,810 people have been affected by floods triggered by overflowing rivers and breached embankments, especially in Imphal East and Imphal West districts.

The disaster has damaged over 3,365 houses, and 47 landslides have blocked roads and disrupted transportation across the state. At least 31 relief camps have been established, primarily in Imphal East, to support the displaced population.

In the capital Imphal, many localities, including Khurai, Heingang, and Checkon, have been inundated. The rising waters from the Imphal River breached embankments and entered vital establishments like the All India Radio Imphal complex and Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS). Several patients had to be shifted to other healthcare centres as floodwaters reached hospital premises.

Situation in Other States

The flood situation in Tripura, Mizoram, and Nagaland has shown slight improvement, but the devastation caused over the past few days continues to impact normal life. Mizoram and Meghalaya have reported six deaths each, Tripura has seen two fatalities, and Nagaland has reported one.

Authorities in these states are actively monitoring water levels and have deployed disaster response teams to assist the affected populations. Relief operations, including the distribution of essential supplies and medical care, are ongoing.

Call for Caution and Preparedness

With the monsoon season still underway, officials across the northeastern states are urging citizens to remain vigilant and heed weather advisories. Rescue and relief efforts are being scaled up, with central and state authorities working in coordination to mitigate further damage.

As the rain continues to batter the region, authorities warn of potential infrastructure damage, crop loss, and health emergencies, especially in low-lying and riverbank areas.
