The RPF of Northeast Frontier Railway seized ganja worth ₹3.67 crore and arrested 126 peddlers in 2025. In recent operations, 168.67 kg of ganja and liquor were confiscated, and several thieves were apprehended. RPF remains committed to combating narcotics and theft on the railway network.

In a significant breakthrough in the fight against narcotics trafficking, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has recovered dry ganja (marijuana) valued at over ₹3.67 crore so far in 2025. According to an official statement released on Sunday, the RPF also apprehended 126 individuals in connection with the transhipment and possession of these illegal substances.

The Northeast Frontier Railway operates in the northeastern states of India, as well as seven districts of West Bengal and five districts in northern Bihar. The region, due to its strategic location and connectivity, has increasingly become a vulnerable route for drug smugglers attempting to move contraband across the country using the railway network.

NFR’s Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, informed that from July 17 to July 24, the RPF intensified its operations at key stations, including Agartala, Katihar, Bagdogra, Rangapara North, Lumding, and Guwahati. These stations, being major transit points, were specifically targeted to disrupt the flow of illegal substances.

During this period alone, approximately 168.67 kilograms of dry ganja, estimated to be worth ₹16.83 lakh, were recovered. Two individuals were apprehended in direct connection with the seizures. The crackdown didn’t stop there—RPF personnel also confiscated 475 bottles of liquor valued at ₹1.05 lakh, leading to the arrest of five additional suspects.

In parallel operations aimed at curbing petty crimes and theft, RPF teams arrested seven individuals involved in the theft of passenger belongings. From them, RPF recovered six stolen mobile phones, one laptop, and cash worth ₹1.19 lakh, demonstrating the unit’s broader commitment to passenger safety and crime prevention.

Summing up the results achieved so far in the year, Sharma highlighted that the RPF has recovered a staggering total of 3,706.937 kilograms of ganja, with an estimated street value of ₹3.67 crore. These seizures resulted in the arrest of 126 drug traffickers, showcasing the effectiveness and vigilance of the RPF’s continuous anti-drug operations.

The seized narcotics, along with the arrested suspects, have been handed over to the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Katihar for further legal proceedings. Sharma reiterated that the RPF remains steadfast in its mission to create a drug-free nation, emphasizing the force’s unwavering vigilance at railway stations and onboard trains.

In addition to combating smuggling and narcotics trafficking, the RPF continues to play a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of railway passengers. The force is always ready to assist rail users and uphold law and order across the railway network.
