Over 300 teams from Assam and other states participated in the ‘Deshbhakti Quiz’ in Guwahati, organized as part of the 5th Deshbhakti Divas. Hosted by DIPR Assam, the event celebrated patriotism and knowledge, with participants across generations and states coming together to honor Tarun Ram Phukan’s legacy.

In a vibrant celebration of patriotism and knowledge, the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Assam, organized a grand quiz competition on Sunday as part of the 5th Deshbhakti Divas celebrations. The mega event witnessed enthusiastic participation from more than 300 teams from Assam and other Indian states, symbolizing national unity and the collective spirit of Deshbhakti.

Held at the Srimanta Sankaradeva International Auditorium in Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, Guwahati, the competition drew an overwhelming response. According to official sources, a total of 348 teams participated out of the 650 that had registered. Teams hailed not only from various districts of Assam but also from states like Kerala and Delhi, underscoring the growing popularity and reach of the event beyond state borders.

A senior government official shared that the event was conducted in two engaging rounds — a preliminary round to shortlist the finalists, followed by a high-stakes final round. The entire competition was hosted by renowned quizmaster Achinta Sharma, whose interactive and dynamic approach kept participants and audience members intellectually engaged and entertained.

Adding to the emotional and cultural richness of the event was the unique participation of three generations within the same team. This inter-generational collaboration was not only heartwarming but also served as a powerful symbol of shared patriotic values and the timeless legacy of India’s freedom struggle. It was a poignant reminder that the essence of Deshbhakti transcends age and time.

The event began with Commissioner and Secretary of the Departments of Information and Public Relations, Kumar Padmapani Bora, paying homage to the legendary patriot Tarun Ram Phukan. In his opening remarks, he extended heartfelt best wishes to all participants and highlighted the significance of the day in inspiring future generations with the ideals of patriotism and sacrifice.

The occasion was further elevated by the presence of Assam’s Information and Public Relations Minister, Pijush Hazarika, who commended the efforts of DIPR officials and staff for organizing such a large-scale and meaningful event. He expressed appreciation for the participation of teams from across the country and lauded the inspirational involvement of multi-generational teams. “This spirit of collective participation across age groups reflects the very core of Deshbhakti,” the Minister said. He also noted with pride that the quiz competition had successfully drawn nationwide attention, showcasing Assam’s commitment to preserving the memory of its freedom fighters.

The results of the quiz competition will be officially announced during the state-level Deshbhakti Divas celebration on Monday, where the winners will be felicitated with prizes. This annual observance has gained increasing importance since its inception in 2021 and is held in memory of the great freedom fighter Tarun Ram Phukan, fondly remembered as Deshbhakta.

Deshbhakti Divas is now celebrated at both the state and district levels, led by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations. This year, the celebration includes floral tributes at the statue of Tarun Ram Phukan at Tarun Ram Phukan Udyan, Bharalumukh. The main state-level programme will take place at Lok Sewa Bhawan in the Assam Secretariat.

Tarun Ram Phukan was a prominent freedom fighter and literary figure who, along with Gopinath Bordoloi, played a key role during the British colonial era in safeguarding Assam’s integrity. Their combined efforts were instrumental in preventing Assam from becoming a part of Pakistan during the Partition era — a historical contribution that continues to inspire generations.

The resounding success of the Deshbhakti Quiz reflects Assam’s dedication to remembering and honoring its historical icons, while simultaneously engaging the public — especially the youth — in thoughtful reflections on India’s journey to freedom and unity. Through education, interaction, and spirited competition, the event stands as a remarkable model of commemorative civic engagement.
