Traders dealing with cattle business in Teliamura have strong exception to the way took action in the cattle market that was in operation for the last 40 years or more. though at the face ot it wholly ignoring the legal parameters- either due to ignorance or due to negligence or may be in connivance with the law enforcing agencies. The cattle market run by the Teliamura Agri produces Markets Committee .
Recently there were some movement against illegal cattle trades and also smuggling in the state by one organization Gau Gyan Foundation. This organization armed with solid research and with extreme motivation and dedication to their mission to save and protect the cattle were moving and pushing all the stones even endangering their life. Their daredevil acts andunwavering committment ,of late, invited attention frm all section of people and police were also not left without the spell that they had created. The foundation found out that though the market was in operation for the last 40 years it was actually an illegal market in true sense. The foundation pointed out clearly that the market lacked the necessary infrastructure to conduct a cattle market and violated Livestock related Acts. So they protested and demanded immediate police action. Faced by the splid legal arguments , police acted and stopped the market in its peak business time.
A large police force led by Teliamura sub-divisional police officer Sona Charan Jamatia on Saturday went to the market stopped cattle trading
Police clarified the complaint was lodged on the basis of improper infrastructural issues in the market which had been running for a long time. The infrastructure required to run a Livestock market includes the provision of drinking water for the cattle, the presence of veterinarians and the provision of food for the cattle. However, in view of the absence of such infrastructure the market was dismissed, said police.
In the complaint, the social organization, namely Gau Gyan, alleged, Cattle are brutally treated and tortured. They also alleged violations of PCA Act 1960, PCA Regulation of livestock Market Rules 2017 and Transportation of Animal Rules 1978/ 2001. Members of the organization demanded the seizure of cattle which were brought in the market and arrests of the violators.
Police seized a cow from the market and took it into their custody and said that the market cannot be made operational until the required infrastructure is developed.
However, the police intervention into the cattle market triggered strong repercussions among the traders.
The traders questioned the sudden police action. Traders also vented asked as to why the local administration allowed running the ‘illegal’ market for the last 4 decades.
