NEET UG 2026 examination cancelled after alleged paper leak and irregularities surfaced. NTA confirms refund for 2.3 million candidates, announces fresh examination process, new admit cards, and re-exam schedule while investigations continue into security lapses.

Thousands of medical aspirants across India were left shocked after the National Testing Agency (NTA) officially cancelled the NEET UG 2026 examination following reports of widespread irregularities and an alleged question paper leak. The examination, conducted on May 3, was cancelled on May 12 after the agency received what it described as “credible and incriminating” inputs from central and enforcement agencies.

The NEET UG examination is one of the country’s largest and most competitive entrance tests for admission into undergraduate medical courses. This year, nearly 2.3 million candidates appeared for the examination, making the cancellation a major development in the education sector.

According to the NTA, the first reports regarding suspicious activities linked to the examination reached the agency on May 7, four days after the test was conducted. The information allegedly pointed towards organized irregularities and possible leakage of examination papers. After receiving these reports, the agency forwarded the matter to central investigative authorities on the morning of May 8 for independent inquiry and further action.

Following a detailed assessment of the information received from investigative agencies, the NTA concluded that maintaining the credibility and fairness of the examination process required complete cancellation of the test. The agency stated that preserving public trust in the examination system was its highest priority.

In an official clarification, the NTA confirmed that all students who appeared for NEET UG 2026 would receive a complete refund of their examination fees. It also announced that candidates would not have to pay any additional fee for the fresh examination. The agency assured students that the refund process would begin as soon as possible.

The NTA further clarified that candidates would not need to submit fresh applications for the re-examination. Existing registrations will remain valid, and the agency will issue new admit cards before the revised examination date. The detailed schedule for the fresh examination process is expected to be announced shortly through official notifications.

Despite introducing advanced security measures for this year’s examination, including GPS tracking systems and digital watermarking of question papers, the agency admitted that security lapses still occurred. Officials acknowledged that the leak allegations exposed serious vulnerabilities in the examination management system.

The NTA stated that it would bear the full financial responsibility for conducting the re-examination through its own internal resources. Officials also emphasized that the agency is fully cooperating with central investigating authorities and has provided access to all relevant records, documents, and examination-related materials.

To assist candidates and parents during the uncertainty surrounding the cancellation, the agency has continued operating its helpline and email support services. Students have been encouraged to contact official support channels for verified information and clarification regarding the re-examination process.

At the same time, the NTA urged students and guardians not to rely on rumors or unverified social media claims. Officials warned that misleading information circulating online could create unnecessary panic among candidates already dealing with stress and uncertainty.

The cancellation has triggered strong reactions from students, parents, and education experts nationwide. Many students expressed disappointment after spending months preparing for the highly competitive examination. Several parents also questioned how such a major security breach could occur despite the implementation of advanced monitoring systems.

Education experts believe the controversy may intensify demands for stricter examination security protocols and greater accountability within national testing systems. The incident has once again raised concerns regarding the vulnerability of large-scale entrance examinations in India.

While the investigation continues, millions of students are now waiting for the announcement of fresh examination dates and hoping that the re-examination process will be conducted in a transparent and secure manner.
