South Korean President Lee Jae-myung nominates close ally Kim Min-seok as prime minister, signaling a new era of leadership. With key appointments in place, Lee aims to restore stability and strengthen South Korea’s position amid domestic challenges and global tensions.

On his first day in office, newly elected South Korean President Lee Jae-myung made a significant political move by nominating his long-time confidant and fellow Democratic Party (DP) member, Kim Min-seok, as the next prime minister. The announcement was made during a press conference at the presidential office on Wednesday, highlighting Lee’s intent to form a strong and trusted leadership team amid national and international challenges.

Kim Min-seok, a four-term lawmaker and former student activist, played a pivotal role as a top campaign aide during Lee’s presidential run. Known for his legislative expertise and advocacy on public welfare issues, Kim brings a blend of political acumen and reformist zeal that Lee believes is crucial for the country’s recovery.

“Kim brings extensive legislative experience, strong policy expertise in public livelihood issues, international perspective and unifying political leadership — the right person to lead the nation through crises and restore the people’s economy,” Lee said while announcing the nomination.

The nomination will now move to the National Assembly for a confirmation hearing, where parliamentary approval is required.

In additional key appointments, Kang Hoon-sik, another prominent figure from Lee’s campaign, was appointed as chief of staff, according to reports by Yonhap news agency. Furthermore, veteran diplomat Wi Sung-lac has been named national security adviser, while former Unification Minister Lee Jong-seok is slated to head the National Intelligence Service.

Lee’s presidency marks a dramatic political comeback. He narrowly lost the 2022 election to Yoon Suk Yeol by less than one percentage point. However, Yoon’s controversial attempt to impose martial law in December led to his impeachment and removal, paving the way for Lee’s victory.

Lee secured 49.42% of the vote against Kim Moon-soo of the conservative People Power Party (PPP), who received 41.15%. The election results reflect a deeply polarized political climate in South Korea, with ongoing domestic and foreign policy challenges, including tensions with North Korea and shifting U.S. trade policies.

Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Lee via social media platform X, expressing optimism about deepening the India-South Korea Special Strategic Partnership.

Lee’s swift appointments reflect his desire to act decisively, stabilize governance, and rally national unity in the wake of political upheaval.
