Mountaineer Aritra Felicitated by CM and Tourism Minister for Scaling Mt Everest
In a proud moment for Tripura and a shining example of grit and courage, 28-year-old mountaineer Aritra Roy, hailing from Badharghat in Agartala, had etched his name in history by successfully summiting Mount Everest—the world’s highest peak—on May 19, 2025. Recognizing his remarkable achievement, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Wednesday felicitated the young climber in an event that celebrated not only a personal victory, but also a milestone for the state’s representation in global adventure sports.

A Moment of Honour
The Chief Minister hosted Aritra Roy at his official residence and extended his heartfelt congratulations. In a social media post, Dr. Saha wrote:
“After climbing through some of the world’s most treacherous terrains, he stood atop the 29,035-foot summit on May 19, 2025. Today, I felicitated the young mountaineer at my official residence & conveyed my good wishes for his future endeavours.”
Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury also extended the state’s appreciation by honouring Roy and handing over a cheque of ₹50,000 as a token of support. “We are proud of the historic feat achieved by Aritra Roy,” the Minister remarked, assuring continued support for his future adventures.
The Ascent of Dreams
Aritra Roy’s journey to the top of the world is a tale of grit, discipline, and an indomitable spirit. Battling sub-zero temperatures, low oxygen levels, icy slopes, avalanches, and sudden snowstorms, Roy braved the Himalayan wilderness to finally reach the summit.

Sources close to his expedition team reveal that Aritra had trained for over three years for the Everest mission, participating in multiple preparatory climbs across the Himalayan ranges, including expeditions to Mount Rudugaira, Mount Deo Tibba, and high-altitude treks in Sikkim and Ladakh.

His Everest campaign began in early April 2025 from Kathmandu, Nepal, where he joined a team of international climbers. After weeks of acclimatization at base camps and making successive climbs between Camp 1 to Camp 4, Aritra pushed for the summit from South Col in the early hours of May 19, navigating the treacherous Hillary Step and the Death Zone before standing on the summit around 5:30 AM (local time).
In his words, shared after returning to base camp, “The moment I planted my feet on the summit, tears just rolled down. It wasn’t just about the climb—it was about everything it took to get there. The pain, the fear, the failures… it all felt worth it.”
From Badharghat to the Roof of the World
Aritra Roy’s story is also a story of aspiration from the margins. Coming from a middle-class family in Badharghat, Agartala, he defied the odds in a state where mountaineering is still an under-represented discipline.
A former student of Tripura University and an avid trekker since his college days, Roy took up mountaineering seriously in his early twenties. He enrolled in formal training at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) in Uttarkashi and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) in Darjeeling.
What sets Aritra apart is not just his personal courage but also his vision to make adventure sports more accessible to youth in Tripura. He has often spoken about setting up an adventure training institute and promoting eco-tourism and high-altitude sports in the Northeast.
A Future with the Mountains
Following his Everest conquest, Aritra is already planning his next expeditions, including a possible attempt at Kangchenjunga or Makalu, two of the highest and most challenging Himalayan peaks. He has also received interest from national adventure clubs and defense training academies to serve as a guest instructor and motivational speaker.
The state government’s support, as assured by the Tourism Minister, is expected to open new doors for him and inspire budding adventurers from Tripura.
A New Chapter in Tripura’s Youth Aspirations
Aritra Roy’s achievement is not merely an individual triumph—it signals a shift in the aspirations of Tripura’s youth. With his feet now firmly planted in history, Aritra stands as a beacon for those who dream beyond boundaries.
As he continues to scale newer heights, the people of Tripura—and indeed India—will be watching with pride and hope.
