Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin had a 45 minute-long conversation on the phone on Tuesday to discuss the developments in Afghanistan, after the Taliban seized power on August 15.

The Prime Minister took to Twitter to share the snippets of the discussion with Putin.

“Had a detailed and useful exchange of views with my friend President Putin on recent developments in Afghanistan. We also discussed issues on the bilateral agenda, including India-Russia cooperation against COVID-19. We agreed to continue close consultations on important issues,” Modi tweeted.

According to media reports, Russia and India also agreed to create a permanent bilateral channel to discuss the issues pertaining to Afghanistan.

On Monday, the Prime Minister spoke over the phone with his German Chancellor Dr Angela Merkel when they discussed the current crisis in Afghanistan.

“The leaders discussed the unfolding security situation in Afghanistan and its implications on the region and the world,” read a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs.

“They emphasised the importance of maintaining peace and security, with the most urgent priority being the repatriation of stranded people,” read the statement.
