In an inaugural meeting on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s newly formed NDA government approved an ambitious proposal to construct an additional 3 crore houses for rural and urban households under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). This decision aims to address the growing housing needs of eligible families under the scheme, reflecting the government’s ongoing commitment to ensuring housing for all.
The PMAY scheme, which has been a cornerstone of the Modi administration since its inception in 2015-16, focuses on providing financial assistance to eligible families for the construction of houses equipped with essential amenities. Since the launch of PMAY, a remarkable 4.21 crore houses have been completed for poor families across India, highlighting the substantial impact of the scheme.
Each house constructed under PMAY is equipped with basic amenities such as toilets, LPG connections, electricity, and functional household water connections. This is achieved through the convergence of various Central and state government schemes, ensuring a comprehensive improvement in the living standards of the beneficiaries.
The first Cabinet meeting of the Modi 3.0 government took place at the Prime Minister’s residence in Delhi. Among the key decisions was advising the President to convene the 18th Lok Sabha.
Additionally, Prime Minister Modi signed his first official file to authorize the release of Rs 20,000 crore as the 17th installment of the PM Kisan Nidhi scheme, aimed at benefiting 9.3 crore farmers.
After signing the file, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the government’s dedication to farmers’ welfare, stating, “Ours is a government fully committed to Kisan Kalyan. It is therefore fitting that the first file signed on taking charge is related to farmer welfare. We want to keep working even more for the farmers and the agriculture sector in the times to come.”
