A violent incident in Kalachara, under the Sabroom subdivision, resulted in the deaths of two individuals on Sunday. A mentally unstable man, reportedly under the influence of narcotics, fatally attacked a Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) activist. In retaliation, an enraged mob lynched the assailant, killing him on the spot. Law enforcement authorities have recovered both bodies and initiated separate investigations, a senior police official confirmed.

According to Sabroom Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Nityananda Sarkar, “At around 11:50 AM, Manbazar police station received reports of a mentally unstable individual, identified as Ashik Debnath, turning violent and attacking people in his neighborhood without provocation. One individual who attempted to restrain him sustained critical injuries and later succumbed.”

The victim was identified as Debashpriya Bhattacharjee, an active DYFI member affiliated with the opposition Communist Party of India (Marxist). Upon arrival, police encountered resistance from Debnath, who hurled stones and bricks to fend them off. He later fled toward a nearby market, where he was overpowered by a furious mob and beaten to death.

Police later discovered Debnath’s body in the market area. A forensic team conducted an on-site investigation before transferring the bodies for post-mortem examination. Sarkar confirmed that two separate cases had been registered regarding the deaths. Three individuals were injured during the altercation, and reports indicate that Debnath’s mother was also assaulted the night before.

Eyewitnesses revealed that Bhattacharjee and other community members had gone to Debnath’s residence upon hearing about his erratic behavior, intending to take him to the police. However, before they could act, Debnath launched an attack.

Local sources described Debnath as mentally unstable and frequently seen wandering the streets aimlessly. He was also allegedly a drug addict. The shocking series of events has left the community in mourning, casting a shadow of grief over the area.
