“Mob Justice in Kolachhara: Double Murder Raises Law and Order Concerns”

Must Read

Kolachhara witnessed a shocking double murder on Sunday, reigniting fears of mob violence reminiscent of the 2018 lynching of Sukanta Chakraborty in Sabroom. The gruesome incident has left residents deeply unsettled and raised serious concerns about law and order in the region.

Terrorized by a Notorious Attacker

According to local reports, 28-year-old Asik Debnath, a known drug addict, had long been terrorizing the community with his violent behavior. Residents claimed that nearly every day, someone in the area would fall victim to his assaults, yet no concrete action had been taken to restrain him.

On Sunday, a group of young men from the locality decided to confront Asik at his residence, hoping to subdue him. However, the situation quickly escalated when Asik, armed with an iron rod and a sharp weapon, launched a violent attack on his visitors. Three individuals sustained serious injuries in the assault.

Gruesome Killing Sparks Outrage

In a horrifying turn of events, Asik repeatedly bludgeoned 35-year-old Deshpriya Bhattacharya on the head with the iron rod, inflicting fatal injuries. Reports indicate that Bhattacharya’s skull was crushed in the brutal attack. His lifeless body was later thrown into a nearby pond. Shockingly, bystanders who witnessed the assault failed to intervene in time to save him.

Upon receiving information about the unfolding violence, a police team from Manubazar, accompanied by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Sabroom Nityananda Sarkar, rushed to the scene. Despite surrounding Asik’s house, the police faced resistance as the assailant hurled stones and bricks from inside. At one point, he charged at both police and local residents with a sharp weapon, escalating the chaos.

Mob Lynching Ends the Rampage

Asik attempted to flee but was soon overpowered by an enraged mob. The gathered crowd subjected him to a brutal beating, leaving him severely injured and unconscious on the road. Police intervened and transported him to Kolachhara Community Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Police Investigation and Security Measures

The double homicide has cast a pall of fear and mourning over the entire Sabroom subdivision. Authorities swiftly deployed additional police forces across Kolachhara to prevent further unrest. Upon learning about the incident, South Tripura District Police Chief Maria Krishna Chandrasekhar arrived at the scene, and a forensic team was dispatched to assist in the investigation.

Confirming the details, SDPO Nityananda Sarkar stated, “A distress call was received at Manubazar police station at 11:50 AM, reporting the killings. Police immediately responded and brought the situation under control. The bodies have been sent to Kolachhara Community Hospital for further procedures. Two cases have been registered, and a thorough investigation is underway.”

Community in Shock, Family Devastated

Residents described Deshpriya Bhattacharya as a well-respected community member known for his social work. Though he was affiliated with the Left, he was admired across political lines. His sudden and tragic death has left his family in deep mourning. He is survived by his wife, Namita Chakraborty, a teacher at Barkhola Primary School, and their son, Arghyadeep Bhattacharya, who recently appeared for his secondary school examinations.

Rising Concerns Over Law and Order

As security is tightened and forensic experts continue their analysis, the chilling incident has once again brought to the forefront the dangers of unchecked violence and mob justice in the region. Authorities are urging the public to maintain peace while investigations proceed to uncover the full details behind the tragic events in Kolachhara.
